Flat White Blues
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 19, 2004 4:24 PM
Greetings...

Just for a little back ground, I am returning to modeling after about a 20 year vacation. Currently I have been building mostly Revell 1/48 Aircraft models to try and skill up before tackling things more complicated. (Nothing against Revell mind you, I just have a source where I can get some of their less popular models very cheap, so it made sense to do that).

Anyway, something that is really frustrating me right now is the flat white color. I have tried both the square-ish Testors that I have memories of from childhood and the newer (from my point of view at least) Model Masters flat white. I am not sure if it is my technique, the paint or a combination of all the above, but getting even coverage with this color is a nightmare.

Since I live in IL, using an airbrush it out of the question until it either warms up and I can use it outside, or I find the right pair of shoes to convince my wife to let me purchase a spray booth Smile [:)]

Any advice, or recomendation of a manufacturer would be greatly appreciated. My next project is a F-16, which appears to have a good deal of, yes, flat white.

Thank You!

Whenever using white - gloss or flat - it's alway best to pre-prime the plastic with either regular primer or another color first. Typically a light grey will work best.

Welcome to the forum and hope this helps...

Absolutely! I always struggled with whites, by the time I got any decent coverage, it was so thick that it obscured details. Then I got Floquil Reefer White. I'll never look back, I love that stuff.

Welcome back to the great world of modeling, and to our quaint (or not so..) little Forum! Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Here's another big thumbs up for Floquil Reefer White.

It's the best, and although I only airbrush with it, I think that spraying is the best way to know what a paint can really do. Awesome coverage with minimal amount of spray. Should work equally as well with a brush. It is so opaque that I use it as a base for yellow, and it really makes that yellow pop!

If you have a hard time finding it, try a hobby shop that specializes in trains ([:0], I know). Seems that Floquil's line is more geared toward that realm.

BTW, I live in Colorado, and I can airbrush successfully in my garage even in 40 deg. temps.

I also am a big fan of Floquil Reefer White, but another excellent flat white is from Vallejo. It's an acrylic & would probably be better than the Floquil, if you are brush painting.
