I airbrush mine on them fill in the panels with the appropiete color. I let it dry a couple of hours then look at, taking the same color as the fill in color and mist it over the model to lightened the still dark panel lines to a more realistic (to me) look.

there are several methods of preshading panel lines Mike. some paint along all the panel lines with a brush, and some airbrush the panel lines a dark grey to black color. the key to preshading, whatever method you decide to use to darken the panel lines, is not to apply a very thick coat of paint over the preshading. check out this link http://www.cf-18.com/tech3.htm good luck. later.

pre shading aircraft panel lines

Hi,
I've read many of the descriptions of using a "sludge wash" I think they call it, to preshade aircraft panel lines prior to painting.
Maybe I just missed it, but I am unclear as to whether the roughly applied sludge is left to dry in and around the panel line or is to be cleaned up from everything but the line before the main paint job is applied. If left outside the line I assume it is expected to fainlly show through the final paint job.
Sorry if I'm beating a severely wounded horse.
