Smoking tips for the non smoker
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 21, 2005 12:54 AM
I have a couple of canopy questions for you experts out there. I usually do WWII aircraft, but have slipped those surly bonds into an EA-6B and a Viking, both have tinted canopies and yellow edging around the frame. Does anyone have a good technique for smoking the canopies and adding the yellow edge-within-the-edge?

Hello Stugeorge633,

You want to take a look a Swanny's web site, he is the guru of tips and tricks and has a great section on tinting windows, here is the link to the certain tip

http://www.swannysmodels.com/Tinting.html

But I would recommend going through his entire site it is excellent.

Cheers

I recommend Swannys site also. But I don't have the patience to try the method he does. I have used plain food coloring and future with good results. Swannys method is better but food coloring is just plain quick.

I have heard of people spraying Tamiya Smoke as a layer of tint.

For the yellow framing, I seem to remember reading that you can get decal film that's plain yellow (or you could print/paint clear or white film to get the same). Tape two #11 blades together, and use that to cut thin strips of constant width.

I second Zokissima on this one. If you have a speady hand and decent da ab you can tamiya smoke those canopies
