help troubleshoot for a newbie airbrusher

Bought a Paasche VL - siphon feed double action internal mix - and hooked-up to a new Testors blue mini air compressor (Item#50204). Racking my brains ever since! Banged Head [banghead]
My problem: whenever I spray, the air (and a little bit of whatever I have in the cup - I've tried enamel and just plain water - it just spurts out at once (for about a quarter second) and then dies down to a hiss so that no more paint (not even pure water) is able to be siphoned out of the cup - just a weak stream of air. I've disasembled and thoroughly inspected the airbrush, which seems to have no obvious defects or obstructions. The only thing I can figure is the compressor I bought is a piece of junk or defective (this one retails for about $100) in that it won't supply the requisite psi to siphon the cup/bottle after the initial 1/4 second on the trigger. Anyone had any experience with this particular compressor? Or does anyone have any advice on further troubleshooting this problem? I've also considered the hose might be the problem - a slight leak can be detected between the nipple and nut on the compressor end of the hose - that came with the airbrush. But that seems to be minor and just a part of the hose design, as there is no washer or seal to prevent minor leakage between the two metal parts that comprise that end of the hose.
Any suggestions from experienced airbrushers would be appreciated. Banged Head [banghead]

Welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of information here from many experienced people. This may help your problem. You need teflon tape between the AB hose and the compressor. That will fix the leak and may fix the problem. Disconnect the AB from the hose and see if you can feel a good stream of air from the compressor. If not, its the compressor. Try Lowes or Home Depot for the teflon tape.

Hope this helps.

By the way, the VL is a such a good brush, I have two.
Dixieart.com has a great selection of AB parts and accessories at good prices.

the testors blue mini is a good compressor. I use it and it definitely generates enough psi.

Welcome to the forum

You've got a problem and it has to be one of three things. The air compressor, the supply hose, or the air brush. I'd start by disconnecting the supply hose from the aircompressor, turning the compressor on and seeing what type of air flow it puts out. If you get very little air flow then the compressor is bad and you need to replace it. If the compressor is working properly, reconnect the supply hose to the compressor and disconnect it from the air brush and see what the air flow is like at that location. Again, if the air flow is low, you've got a defective hose. If the hose checks out, then your problem is in the airbrush. No matter what item is defective, if it is new, then the folks you bought it from should be willing to either repair or replace it. (I'm leaning towards a defective air hose - had more than a couple of those in the past - usually happens when they install the connection fittings)

Like QMeister said you need to check your airflow first. Leaks are seldom minor with small compresors. There isn't a lot of volume to go around and if you have a leak it will adversely affect your volume of air (pressure and volume are different but related). Use Teflon tape as recommended by Buff Fan on your hose connections. If necessary put some soapy water on all the connections and see if you have a leak. Anywhere there is a leak the soap will blow bubbles.

Thanks to all. A helpful bunch, you are. The systematic troubleshooting approach was much appreciated - as was the soapy water idea. I definitely found bubbles at the connection to the compressor. Now what? Buy a new hose? Disapprove [V]...I'm so cheap. I visually inspected the threads on the compressor and hose and found nothing significant. It's frustrating to think of buying another 'cause the hose itself doesn't seem to have any leaks or be defective - it's just that the female end doesn't form a seal with the compressor - and yes I've even used a wrench as a last-ditch effort to make the Censored [censored] thing seal. Obviously the threads mate-up, but that's not good enough I guess.
So now anyone got any good hose recommendations for the Paasche VL to mate to the Testors mini-blue? Tankmaster, what do you use?
Troubleshooting the compressor was tough, by the way, 'cause the different sized openings (compressor opening vs. AB hose opening) make an apples-to-apples comparison hard to guage without a guage. (the mass flow equation to describe that must have slipped my noodle) I'd estimate though that it's putting out a good amount of pressure, and there aren't any little wierd sounds to be heard, or sights to be seen through the transparent casing.
Once again thanks to all for your effort in this. Thumbs Up [tup]
