Applying Non Skid Coating to Armor
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 7:46 PM
Hey Guys,

I have a dilema with my most recent armor build. I bought a Tamyia M1A1 and it has no non skid. So, I would like to have your views and tips on how I can apply a non skid coating. I have read a very detailed article on how to do it, but I have to get some Mr. Surfacer 500. It also recommends that I have a gravity feed airbrush. The Airbrush is a no brainer because I have read some threads already on that subject. I am leaning towards the Iwata Revolution CR 4500.

So, any comments, ideas, or tips that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

What article is this? Is it online? Sounds like Mr. Surfacer 500 will work. There are a few threads about this in the armor forum. You could try re-posting this question in the armor forum also.

I don't model amour but i can share a technique i use for non skid surfaces such as on aircraft wings. I mask and airbrush a layer of paint and then sprinkle talcum powder over the top when the paint is still wet. I then blow off the excess and repaint to colour and seal . You can apply several applications of talc depending on how rough you want the surface.
This technique is simple and looks great.I hope this helps you and maybe its something you would like to try on your amour models. Happy modeling , ............Peter.

The above link is first a comparison of M1A1 model kits that you can build. It goes into great detail and gives the reader great tips.

When you get to the end of the article you will find a link about applying Non-skid to armor.

Enjoy.....

Thanks for the link Cougar35. I read the non-slip technique article. Seems like a solid technique to me. He says to get the pressure and spray right on scrap plastic first then spray the model. Also he intentionally wants a bit of splatter. Olsen's technique is good too. I will probably try both at some point.
