I've had the same luck with Dull Coat from Testors, Andy... thought it was just old paint until I read enough about it here to think it is what batch it came out of that determines it...

I've used Dull Coat, and the only problems that I ever had was that there seemed to be batch to batch variations in the flatness of it. Sometimes it was really flat, other times satin almost bordering on semigloss.  Although it is a lacquer, as long as you airbrush a reasonable coat, it won't atack the finish.

That said, I have converted to mixing Future with Tamiya X-21 Flat base at the ration of 4 parts Future to 1 part Flat Base.  It gives consistently good results, and because Futur is so cheap as to be effectively free, this makes for an extremely economical finish.

another EXCELLENT dull coat is Polly Scale (or Floquil) flat.  It won't attack your decals and it gives one excellent flat coat!  Also the Color of Eagles flat is a rival to the Floquil.  Otherwise use the Future and enamel or laqcuer will work over it.  IF you let it cure fully before dull coating it...

I have brushed future but I thinned it with Testors thinner first... it came out uniform.  Try it on spare sprue or pieces first and see how it works!

MM Dull Cote can be sprayed on with good results. You must be sure that the undercoat is properly cured before spraying it on. I prefer using automotive lacquers for clear coats. Acrylics just don't give me a proper surface for weathering.

I've heard you can brush it on, but I've never tried. I've only airbrushed with it. I'm thinking about getting a Badger 250 for spray clear and flat coats with rather than my trusty 150.

Read up on future at Swanny's site (http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html). I notice he does say you can use a wide soft paintbrush. Good luck!

How do you apply the future? Can it be brushed on? I have read that it has self-leveling properties, so does that mean I can brush it on a little thick and the brush strokes should level themselves out? I have an airbrush, but its the mighty mini from wal-mart, which is probably not worth the money I spent, but anyhoo, a part is missing so it doesn't matter, can I brush it, or is that going to be a problem?

I use Modelmaster clear flat. It is ready to spray right out of the bottle, it's acrylic and it does a super job.

I used that Testor's dullcote in the spray can and will never use it again, my finish had small fibers in it, as well as orange peel, among other things, despite me doing everything else right. I'm not sure who makes another Dull coat, though.

dull clear coat

I am trying to get my first modern jet done soon so I can decal it hopefully next weekend. I got a can (spraypaintDead [xx(] I know) of dull clearcoat, but its laquer! I really don't think that is going to work out to well with an enamel gloss clear coat under the decals and a laquer coat over the top. I know the laquer will attack the enamel, plus I really don't think I like the idea of 100's of tiny decals getting ruinedDead [xx(]! So does anybody know if a dull clear topcoat is made that is enamel, or am I just going to have to deal with the decals silvering? Thanks in advance guys.
