Is it a product-specific thinner or a generic thinner?
Also, is there an American equivalent?

Charly,
Xtracolor are my absolute favorite enamels. The seem to have exceedingly fine pigments in suspension, so it goes on like butter, levels nicely, and produces a high gloss finish.
To cut directly to what I think you want to know, use Testors Enamel Airbrush Thinner to reduce it for painting, and mineral spirits or lacquer thinner for cleanup.
