I dont want to wait for mail order as my LHS does not carry Tamiya Lacquer thinner. But from what I read that would be ideal.

^ In my case for example, I want to pain with Tamiya Racing White. Which it is not available in acrylic =(. So I have to decanted, but I am looking for something to thin it a bit (although it seems pretty thinned already) and most important, a solution to clean my AB with. (Aztek)

Any reason why you can't use Tamiya's own laquer thinner?

Mr Color is lacquer thinner and should work well but I've never actually used it with decanted Tamiya paint. It's fairly mild and probably equates to a slow thinner. I used to use it a lot but bought a gallon of slow thinner locally because of the cost. Slow lacquer thinner is hard to find nowadays unless someone can order it for you and even if they can order it, it may not be in stock. At least that's the way it is around here. If there's any custom shops around that use House of Kolor paints they may have some. Body shops like to use urethanes now and for a lot of them the only lacquer thinner they have around is the cheap stuff they use as a cleaner. Retarder will help but with hardware store thinner you may have to add a good bit. As you know, that stuff dries fast.

If you want to order some thinner you can get it in smaller quantities from Coast Airbrush.

Why do you want to use these lacquers decanted?
Are these colors not available in enamels?
What type models are you painting with them?

I've never decanted the Tamiya cans, but have you asked a local auto body shop, instead of the car parts stores? They might give you a sample of the thinner they use (hint: take a bottle with you!) to try. My guess is that all the automotive lacquer thinners are slow evaporating.

So long folks!

Thinning Tamiya Lacquer - what to use?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 8, 2006 6:45 AM
I would like to thin Tamiya Lacquer paints that I have decanted, but I find the paint dries too fast using lacquer thinner from hardware store. Searching the web I hear of slow evaporating lacquer thinner from automotive shops. I called all the car part shops around here, and they only have 1 type of lacquer thinner, and don't know (and haven't heard of) the slow evaporating type.

Any suggestions on what else to use?

I am wondering if I order some Mr Retarder, would that work with hardware store lacquer thinner, and Tamiya paint and Mr Surfacer 1000?

I have some Mr Color Thinner (110 ml) - Is that lacquer thinner, I thought it was for the acylic line of Gunze paint, but from my web searching it sound (and smells !) like it is for Gunze lacquer paint. Is this slow evaporating?

Can anyone out there clear this up for me??? And if I need to purchase something that can slow the drying of these lacquer based paints, can it be purchased in small town Canada, or Canadian web store???

thanks
