new airbrush...
Posted by hud on Friday, July 21, 2006 3:35 PM

Hey to all,

I just upgraded my Aztec a/b to a Paasche VL. I think I'm going to like it once I learn how to use it the right way. Any tips on the care and feeding of this thing would be greatly appreciated. I've never owned a high dollar a/b and it's a lot different from what I'm used to. I've been praticing on cardboard like the booklet tells you and that's helping but I'd like to here what you guys that own one have to say. Thanks for any advice and recommendations. BTW, I got it at HobbyLobby for half off. Gotta love that part.Big Smile [:D]

Congrats on the new brush!  I don't own the VL, but many here do and love it.

One thing I would recommend is to ditch the cardboard and get an empty 1 gallon plastic water or milk jug.  It will help you a lot, as it has curved AND flat areas which simulate painting on a model better.  I primered mine with Krylon white primer and everytime I come up on something I haven't tried before I always practice on my milkjug first.  when I fill it up with paint I primer it again!

The best advice I could give you is learn how to clean it, and practice before you paint!!!! (then practice again haha)

I've owned a VL in the past and it is a good airbrush indeed.  Some observations I made when using it, was that it seemed to perform better when spayed at higher air pressure settings, unlike Badger, or Iwata brushes.  I was able to get fine lines for my 1/72nd scale models with the fine needle and the compressor adjusted at approx. 30 psi.  General spraying was accomplished at between 15-20 psi.  The VL sprays very nice layers of paint, so general airbrushing, and clear-coating is excellent.  Cleaning the VL is simple as well.  Detatch the 1/4 oz. color cup, clean out the siphon tube and spray thinner in-between colors to keep it clean during a session.  A complete break-down for a thourough cleaning only took me 5 minutes when I was done for the evening.  The VL is a robust, durable design so it should serve you for decades with trouble-free performance.  Parts are very inexpensive and are available at most hobby shops and web stores.  Have fun and let the good times resume!

I got so carried away congratulating you on the new brush I forgot to post this... it holds true for most types of airbrushes including yours.
