yeah I have had to do what Eddie described, sometimes the needle doesn't seat just right I think.  Also make sure the head is on good, just use your hands though, no pliers!!

If it is new it shouldn't be clogged but if you got it from someone else I would definitely clean the thing well as mentioned by Rad...
