Really Cheap testors AB
Posted by Tankmaster7 on Friday, December 29, 2006 10:06 AM
Does anyone have experience with the really cheap (single action external mix) Testor's AB? I'm thining of getting one for painting of non model related things, but i would still like to get a well atomized finish. -Thanks in advance.

I had that one and it was a serious pain to get the paint to atomize right.  I got the Double action internal from testors now and i love it.  It was only $10 bucks more.

If you mean the A220, which functions much like a miniture garden sprayer, that was my first airbrush, and I used it quite successfully on several models.  It's spray pattern is not controllable to any significant degree, but with correct paint thinning, it lays down a nice coat of paint.  I can't complain about its atomization.  Certainly not as good as a regular airbrush, it paints a lot better than a rattle can.

Just to throw out some food for thought, you might consider the Paasche H Set.  Aside from the small and medium tips, color cup, and small siphon bottle, it also comes with a large bottle and large tip.  I use it to spray varnish.

Tanky, just out of curiosity, why the Testors?  I would think that your Eclipse would be more than adequate for any non-modeling job.  If excess use was a concern, and you wanted just a cheap simple sprayer, then the Badger 250 should fill your square.  It just has a three parts ( nozzle, spring, and siphon tube ) if you needed to repair anything. The Paasche is good, but you still run the risk of replacing parts, although they are cheap.

Ive got the A270, which I think is pretty similar, and with lots of paints, no matter how well I thin them, it just spits out this nasty spray.  But with model master enamels, it look beautiful and gives you a perfect thin layer.

My 270 is my workhorse, particularly because my mom threw out my Badger 150...

for basecoats, it is excellent. mine even hauls and atomizes unthinned MM acrylics, but thinned is better. the spray pattern can get a little unpredictable at times. because its external mix, and the airnozzle and the paint nozzle is pointed at an angle, a slight bend in the fragile plastic can cause a turn in the spray pattern

I was looking for larger are coverage on wood and so forth.

For models I'm perfectly happy with my badger 155 and my Iwata hp-bcs.

One drawback for doing large coverage with the Testors A220 is that I've only seen them with with the small siphon bottle.  Since you already own a Bager 155, I don't the Testor's will give you that much wider covereage, and with a smaller bottle than the Badger you would empty the bottle faster.  If you are looking for an inexpensive solution, maybe you can find a deal on a Paasche H with just the large #5 tip and large siphon bottle.

I would have to say, if you are looking for spraying wider covergae than what your BCS can handle, concider moving up to a touchup gun. Something like the - Craftsman Detail and Touch-up Spray Gun for $49.99. You won't find a better AB for the task than your BCS, and if that can't do the trick then it is time to step up a notch. Must have the right tool for the job at hand.  Wink [;)]

Thanks for the advice guys. I will consider the Paasche and also maybe moving up to a touch up spray gun. The decision can hold off for a while since outdoor projects won't really start until spring weather comes back.
