I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have used a range of masking tapes. The lighter the tack, the less likely the lift. Add to that, the direction of the peeling of the tape. My last experience was last night with Tamiya tape. In a moment of reckless abandon, I began to peel the tape rapidly and straight up. When I saw the first paint flaking off, sanity returned and I did two things; peeled SLOWLY and peeled the tape back on itself. No further problems! These are two things I have read, heard and done many times, and they work virtually every time.

This was the first time paint lifted for me and I started to think if the Alclad primer had somthing to do with it. After priming the model was handeled with cotton glows so there should not be any oil residue from my fingers.

Does the Alclad primer need more time to dry before spraying on acrylics?

I use Tamiya acrylics almost exclusively. I never use primer. I've never had paint come up and I use regular masking tape. I also use Tamiya and Testors masking tapes for finer work. I got some bottles of Createx acrylic paint with my airbrush. They lift off rather easily so stopped using them.

Just my 2 pennies.....

The combination of MM flat enamels (allowed to cure for at least 24hrs) as a base coat, Tamiya acrylics over top, and either 3M painter's tape or Tamiya's yellow tape has never given me any problems as far as any lifting of the undercoats. I've never used Alclad primer, even for their own line of metal finishes, so I am unfamiliar with its properties.

gotta be careful with just regular masking tape is it's very sticky and does tend to pull off paint, especially Acrylics.  The Tamiya masking tape is much less tacky, and I've never had it pull off any paint.  Something to consider for next time.  Smile [:)]

Well it appears that the surface may have been contaminated somehow before painting, or the paint layer may have been a little too thick, causing it to dry slower than usual?? Acrylics are just to finicky for me, I stopped using them all together. The experts will be in shortly to help you outSmile [:)]

Paint lifting with maskin tape

I havent used primer earlier but now I started and run into problems. I'm working on a V-1 and the paint lifted from the wings when I removed the masking tape(about 20% lifted). The primer stayd on. The paint had dried for about a week.

I'm using Alclad grey primer and Vallejo Model Color acryllics on top. The primer was around 1 day old when I put on the acryllic. Very thin layers airbrushed on. The maskin tape is Tamiya yellow maskin tape.

My local hobby shop recomeded this primer for use with Vallejo but is there a problem using this combination?
