Hey fellas!

Im currently building the 'African theatre' (trop) version of the Bf 109 G-4 and I am having trouble finding the right 'Africa brown' , sand color that is the base coat for the scheme. Could i have some advice that would point me towards the right color and brand?

It is available as Model Master - 2102, Afrika Braun 1942 (Flat) 1/2 Oz.

See this link:

You just gotta get used to the German spelings of "Afrika" for Africa and "Braun" for brown. Wink [;)]

OK?

I could be wrong but I believe Afrika Braun is actually a Panzer color - I believe the color that you are looking for is RLM 79 - a lighter brown than the Panzer Afrika Braun.  RLM 79 is available from several paint manufacturers in both Enamels and Acrylics.

thanks heaps.. RLM 79 is actually 'sand gelb' or sand yellow, and i quite like the color. I think is fits the desert scheme better.

Just a point of interest - I've maintained for a long time that there were two colors of yellow used by the Luftwaffe in N Africa.  I've read a couple of places that the orgional a/c transfered to that theater used Italian paints to repaint their aircraft after they arrived (109 & 110 Es come to mind) and when the later models (109 Fs & Gs for example) came into the theater, they were painted at the factory w/RLM 79 which is a darker, browner color than the Italian Sand.  (I built a 1/72 Bf109E "Black 8" using MM RLM 79 base and MM RLM 80 splotches - results just didn't look right, too dark).

I just got both volumes of Merrick's Luftwaffe Camoflage and Markings 1933 - 1945 and guess what?  He has two different colors for RLM 79 in the color chips - one (the early color) is a yellowish color that is a close match for Italian Sand and the other is the browner version.  Just thought I'd pass it along

When I painted my '109E Trop, I used Gunze RLM 79 and the color looked right to me.  Not sure if it is 100% accurate, but I like it.

There are two "RLM 79"s listed here: http://www.cybermodeler.com/color/rlm_ww2.shtml
