metalic paint
Posted by Ant on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 10:05 PM

i have just painted a 1/48 p-51 in MM Aluminium. i mixed up a large jar, as there is a fair bit of painting, my first coats dryed fine after about 12 hours. then i had some touch ups to do and i found 2 problems. 1. the paint in the jar, which had been sealed, started to come out of my airbrush very stop start. i cleaned the gun but it still did it. i thinned the paint more and it fixed 95% of the problem. 2. the places i touched up wont seem to dry properly.!

i assume this is because the paint is now to thin? also why is it then after the paint drys i can handel the model, using gloves, but sometimes the paint where you are holding it begins to go soft and smear.?

finally should metallic paint be mixed thin or thicker for airbrushing. i am doing a 1/48 B29 next and i dont want any drama's!!!!!

Your description is classically symptomatic:

It sounds from your description that you used a reducer (the proper term—most people say thinner) that is only marginally compatible with the metallic paint. Using the proper solvent is particularly critical with metallics. This is one area where, absent experience, I would always use the manufacturer's proprietary solvent as a reducer (thinner).

A marginallly compatible solvent will work if the paint and reducer are mixed and sprayed immediately, but allowing the combination to sit results in the binder doing strange things. Remixing and additional thinner may make the problem appear to be solved, but then the coating won't cure. Oops [oops]

Ross Martinek A little strangeness, now and then, is a good thing… Wink

thanks for the reply,Triarius. i went back to the bench and did a bit on an old kit. found that if i mix it 2:1, paint/thinner o get the good result. i agree with letting it sit, in future i will mix only what i need and mix more if im short.

P.S im using White Spirit as thinner, havnt had any drama before?
