Paint opinions ?
Posted by Milairjunkie on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 2:44 PM

After my long break from the hobby, I have been looking at my options on paint. I will be airbrushing mainly 1/72 post war US & UK military aircraft. I would prefer to stick to one manufacturers acrylic range, preferably one that is user friendly (new to airbrushung), easily available in the UK via mail order & preferably a range that willl not require mixing to get reasonable matches (tonal perfection is not my aim).

Reading between the lines, Tamiya seems to fit the bill - but the range seems slightly limited?

I am considering between Tamiya, Humbrol, Vallejo, Mr Hobby, Xtracolor & Testors Model Master.

 Any opinions much appreciated

I use Tamiya exclusively and darn the small color range! I've had tip dry problems with MM Acryl, and the others aren't available locally.

I have heard excellent things about Vallejo and Gunze Sangyo Mr. Hobby (which I also understand is capable of being mixed with Tamiya).

Tamiya is pretty good for German Armor and Aircraft and Japanese everything. I'll probably order in some Gunze one day.

So long folks!

The latest issue of FSM has some information on various acrylic paint brands. I haven't read it yet, but it looks useful after a quick glance.

My personal favorites are Tamiya and Polly Scale acrylics.

I was a bit nervous about using acryl, but I liked the results I got with it. However, my acrylics of choice are still Pollyscale & Tamiya.

Although I use Vallejo, which as was already stated, it is not as readily available, so I would recommend using Tamiya.

If you don't mind the online ordering process from www.ausfwerks.com try the vallejo, they're hands down the best product on the market!

This of course is my opinion!

I also prefer Tamiya but why not try a few brands and see what you personally like?

I just recently tried Tamiya acrylics, and I love them. Polly Scale acryls also airbrush nicely I think. For enamels, which I only use when I have to, it's always Humbrol.

I use Gunze Sangyo acrylics almost exclusively for AB work, and Vallejo for detail brush painting.  I do have some Tamiya paints, and they work well for me too.  I tried the Aeromaster and MM acrylics, but had more trouble than success with them.  Just my My 2 cents [2c]

I use mainly Tamiya paints because they flow very nicely through mu airbrush.  Many people say that they can't be used very well using a brush but I have gotten great results.  I have tried using Gunze Sangyo acylics and I think they behave much like Tamiya paints.  I have little experiance with Polly Scale and Vajelo acyrics so I can't comment on them.  I have only gotten one color of MM acrylic to actually flow through my airbrush.  Other than that, not much success with them.
