Closest match for USN Intermediate Blue?
Posted by ben1227 on Saturday, November 10, 2007 10:34 PM
I'm going to start my Mosquito soon and it'll be finished in U.S. Navy Intermediate Blue. Tamiya only makes this in there dumb spray cans that are expensive and impossible to find. What's the closest acrylic, preferably Tamiya, Pollyscale, or Gunze match for this? I know there's a good color conversion chart somewhere but I lost the link. Ashamed [*^_^*]

Polly Scale No. 505094, "US Intermediate Blue, A/N608" according to the Testors web site.

For reference try IPMS Stockholm. Also the jpsmodel site.

Ross Martinek A little strangeness, now and then, is a good thing… Wink

Thanks. I had a feeling some Testors brand would have a close match, Tamiya doesn't seem to carry many US colors.

Gunze also has a match for it.  And if you like Tamiya I recommend it because it behaves a lot like Tamiya, can be thinned like Tamiya, and in many cases can be mixed with Tamiya.

I did see a very close looking match by Gunze, but the name was different. What was the color you saw called?

Gunze H56 "Intermediate Blue" is a good match.  I use them almost exclusively, and they can be thinned with Tamiya thinner and dry to a semi-gloss luster.  I have even skipped the clearcoat and put decals directly on top of it with no problems.  One word of advice if you decide to use it, give it PLENTY of time to dry before clearcoating.  I have had problems in the past of uncured Gunze causing Future to crack.  It seems that even though it will dry to the touch quickly being an acrylic, it takes it some time to fully cure.  I usually give it two full weeks to cure before clearcoating it.

So that's an almost exact match for the USN blue found on most of the WWII RAF planes?
