vallejo paint question
Posted by cbaltrin on Monday, January 7, 2008 6:22 PM

Hello,

I have heard good things about these paints but have a few questions:

 1) How do you know if they are for aibrushing or brush painting ( I have heard some are pre-thinned for airbrushing).

2) How are their metalic colors. I have never really been a fan of acrylic metalic paints, but thought I would ask.

3) How opaque are these colors? I love brush painting aircraft interior details with Polly Scale ; however, many of their paints need several coats before they totally cover the base color (olive drab and interior green come to mind).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am in the process of switching all of my paints that I use for brush painting to Vallejo!  I have found they cover so well, that one coat is USUALLY enough and the relatively few times it isn't a second coat seals the job.  Part of their line is pre-thinned for airbrushing, but I have not tried them yet.  I have heard from several people that they really like them, though a few colors ( they failed to mention which ones) turn to goo when thinned.

The Model-Aire line is prethinned for airbrushing. The rest of the line is formualted for brushing. Click here and chose "Miniature and model Color" then "Model Color". At the bottom of the page is an excellent tutorial on using their paints.

Note: the regular paint is supposed to be thinned before using. Distilled water, available at any pharmacy, works fine.

I just painted my P-47D prop with Vallejo Model Color black a week ago and I noticed tonight that paint was chipping off from being put into my parts holders and if I ran a fingernail across it anywhere it comes right off. Does this paint not have good adhesion or maybe I didn't prep the plastic well enough?

Did you add the primer first? It's recommended by Vallejo.
