METALIZER TECHNIQUES?...
Posted by MarkS1 on Saturday, June 14, 2008 11:17 AM

Hey all,

Need a few pointers about using Metalizer paints.  Am painting a 1/48 P-38J.  Painted the main body, spinners and gear doors last night with Testors MM Buffing Metalizer. Came out pretty good but I need some help with finishes. The taped area of nose is to be a non-buffed aluminum. I noticed in test taping if I mask the already metalized area it wants to pull off with the tape, so:

1. Should I seal it with MM Metalizer Sealer now, then re-seal after further painting, washes, decals?

2. Is the MM Sealer glossy or flat? Can I decal and wash over it or will I have to seal again with Future? Or should I decal, wash and then seal, then do further painting?

My point is I don't want to get so many coats of seal on this it fills up the recesses and sure as shootin' don't want to mess up the metalized finish.

Also, check out the superchargers, how do they look?

Thanks.

I found out the hard way about MM metalizers as well. So this may help.

1. If you have applied the metalizer, seal it with the MM sealer specific for this paint and let dry for a couple days. The sealer will keep the metal finish from lifting with tape or getting marred.

2. The sealer is more or less a semi gloss which is ok.

3.After the sealer fully dries, then you can mask and paint and apply the decals. The finish is ideal for decal application so no additional clear coats are needed.  I do not recommend any other clear coats over the model. They tend to alter the metal finish and dull it out. If you want to flat coat the decals, just mask them off seperate and coat them.

4. You can apply washes as usual as the last step. I won't recommend applying the sealer over everything. I can't say how the sealer will react with the decals. So, better safe than sorry.

Hey Thanks,

I did use the MM Metalizer Sealer after testing it on another piece I was using for experimentation.  Realized it's ultra thin so I sprayed the model last night. You're right, it does tone down the shine a bit but it's gotta be because that Metalizer wants to rub off as you handle it.

Also realized it'll be fine for decaling and washing although I'm certain I've got to use an acrylic wash, yes?

I really hate to leave the whole thing unsealed after decaling and washing. What about using the Metalizer sealer again?

Thanks.

It works fine over decals as well. I use it all the time if I run out of other clear coats.  Great stuff it is.
