Hair-pulling AB flow problem!
Posted by Porkbits on Thursday, July 10, 2008 1:09 AM
Hey, guys:

I have a Badger 360 that usually works great. You put paint in it, it shoots paint. Done. Now for some reason, when I use a bottle (instead of the tiny built-in paint cup), the AB shoots paint ONLY when I have the AB tilted forward. When I put paint directly into the cup, it works fine. Which I suppose is a workaround, but for larger jobs, that tiny cup just doesn't cut it.

I'm using Xtracolor enamels for the first time so thought it could be the paint, but when I filled the bottle with just thinner, I got the same result--no flow unless I tilted the AB forward.

I've made quadruple sure that the bottle adaptor straw is clear. I've cleaned the needle, tip, and every other part of the AB with thinner multiple times, with no luck.

Dunno, but something is wrong. It seems like when I have the bottle attached, the airflow is impeded just enough so that the AB can't draw paint from the bottle--unless I have the whole kit 'n' kaboodle tilted forward.

The only other factor I can think of is that it's been very humid up here in the Northeast, to the point of being tropical. I have a moisture trap on my compressor (Silent Aire), but maybe that's not enough and I need to wait until the humidity drops (I work in my un-air-conditioned garage)...?

I am completely and utterly stumped. Help.

Thanks!

PB

Is the bottle blocking the the pressure relief hole?

Is this a new problem or have you never used it in bottom feed position before?

Check the position of the hose in the bottle.  I've gotten hoses that were too long for the bottle and would always be shoved off to one of the sides and would be smack up against the side of the bottle, thereby cutting off paint flow.

Maybe you need to increase the PSI from the compressor.  I know when I switch between a bottom feed brush and gravity feed brush, I need to increase the pressure for the bottom feed.

Sounds like it.  The paint cup is gravity feed; the bottle is siphon feed and needs the vent hole.

Yeah, I've never had problems with the bottle before. I did try to adjust the position of the bottle hose, and also increased the PSI, with no luck. Also made sure the bottle wasn't blocking the relief hole, and that the relief hole in the bottle cap is also open.

Hm.

OK, so I tried it again, and some interesting observations:

1) Lots of condensation in the line--when I tested the airflow, the AB started spitting a ton of water (even with moisture trap).

2) Without the tip on, the airflow is fine, but as soon as I put the tip back on, air barely trickles out. Which is confusing, because the pathway in the tip that accommodates the needle is clear (I quadrupled checked). Is there something else in the tip that could be blocked and impeding airflow?

So for kicks, I'm soaking the tip in thinner.
