What'd I do wrong ? - Decals Shrivelling
Posted by Bossman on Saturday, November 29, 2003 10:25 AM
On a recent build, I used the same method that I usually do for applying decals and coating with Testor's Dullcoat. But this time the decals shrivelled up after I applied the Dulcoat. (?)

I brush painted with MM Acrylic, one or two coats of future to gloss the surface, applied decals, a coat or two of Testors Decal set solution to get them down, (at this point I don't remember whether I hit them with an additional coat of future) then sprayed dullcoat on. It always worked in the past with good results.

This is the first time I have made a Hasegawa model. Is there anything different about the decal base for these guys that would cause this ? Any other ideas as to what may have caused the problem ? I'm without a clue.

Did you wait long enough for the decals to fully dry and set? If not applying dull coat would cause then to react and shrink.

Testors dull coat is a lacquer based material and can cause damage to decals. I reccomend using Polly Scale clear flat instead - much safer. Also you should give the decals 24 hours to completely dry down before attempting a final sealant.

Thanks guys,

I'm goin from memory - which has never been really good - but I'm pretty sure I let them go for a while. But If it was on a weekend - I may have tried to get back to it before a full 24 hrs went by.

Is the Poly Scale an acrylic based material ? If so - I'd much rather use something that isn't quite as chemically nasty as the Dullcoat.

Just a note to Swanny - That's an absolutely gorgeous PB4Y !

Yes, the Polly Scale product is acrylic. Low VOC and non-reactive. I used to use the Testors products but switched over about three years ago and have never looked back.
