Has anyone run into this problem with Hasegawa decals?
Posted by Daywalker on Saturday, January 16, 2010 6:53 PM

This photo is taken of a decal sheet from a Hasegawa 1/48 ME-109G-10 "End of War", kit #09742.  If you look at the black band especially, and also the blue/white/blue band, you can see the odd clear coat on the sheet.

Most of the markings on the sheet have this, and it is especially noticeable on the larger ones.  I bought the kit from Sprue Brothers, and contacted them about it.  They sent a replacement sheet, which has the same problem.  I ended up using AM decals on the build, so it didn't matter much.  Yesterday, I received another kit from Sprue Brothers, this one a 1/32 JU-87D-5 Stuka.  The decal sheet has the same problem.  I contacted them about it, and they are trying to get another sheet from the distributor.  Looking back, I realize that both kits were in their "Super Specials" list, perhaps the kits listed there are seconds, known to be defective- hence the lower prices?

My question is, has anyone else encountered this?  I am wondering how best to solve the dilemma.  Will they perform like all of the others, with no adverse effects from the patchy clearcoat?  Should I give them a coat of acrylic clear as a sealer?  I can play around with the 1/48 109 decals, but I really do not want to ruin any of them as I would like to build both A/C on the sheet.

I could possibly send the Stuka back, but I really wanted the kit and the price was VERY good.  But, as I look for AM decal sheets for it, I am coming up blank.

Hi Frank,

Actually, you see this quite frequently with Hasegawa decals. It often happens because they are packed in the plastic bags "face out" with no "separator" sheet like in some other brands, so sometimes the decals stick slightly to the bags. In my experience, it's never caused a problem. The funny shiny looking patch usually disappears when the decal hits the water and if not, a flat coat fixes it right up.

Obviously a poor printing job during the clear coat. I bet a spray of Future would fix that up.

So long folks!

Thanks for the quick replies fellas!  Believe it or not, I suspected I would hear from both of you.  I shall give them a try, using ones I could replace if needed as I normally do, and if that doesn't work- I'll give 'em a coat of Future and try it that way.  Thanks again for the reassurance, much appreciated!

Probably a bit late on a reply Frank, but the Jake I am doing right now has the same look to the decals and this kit is well over 20 yrs old. The decals are just fine. They respond well to set and sol still after all this time. The only real problem I have with Hase decals in the kits of my stash is that every single kit's sheet has yellowed. Only my Hase kits have yellowed! Of course you just pop in the window and that clears up after a couple weeks. So in the end Frank I'm with the others, you shouldn't have anything to worry about at all.YesToast
