Tamiya decals
Posted by MikeV on Friday, November 16, 2007 2:04 PM

Are the decals in the Tamiya kits any good?

I am building the P-47D "Little Chief" and was wondering if the kit decals are acceptable?

Thanks

I've never had a problem (other than ones caused by ME) with Tamiya decals.

So long folks!

Tamiya decals are usually opaque, but a little on the thick side.  They will work OK using the MicroScale system.  I usually give them 3 light coats of Future after they have cured in order to  minimize the carrier film edgae from showing.

I agree with Bill and Rick.  Tamiya decals work quite well as long as you have a good supply of decal solvent around.  They are completely opaque but they are quite thick.  Several applications of MicroSol will thin them down but it does take several applications.

I agree, very nice but a little thick.  The mivro system works quite well.  Gunze Mr. Softer will REALLY pull em down, and has been known to occasionally tear them in the process (don't ask me how I know!).  In other words, if you need to use it, use it SPARINGLY!!!

DON'T USE SOLVASET unless it's well diluted.  Test on a scrap first.  Tamiya decals do not like Solvaset.  They will pucker up into wrinkled balls to show you their displeasure.

Mike, I picked up some "Mr. Mark Setter" and "...Softer". That seems to tame Tamiya decals fairly well. I had my LHS order them. It's about $10 for both, but they last forever. As others have said, Tamiya's decals are nice, yet a little thick. Good luck!

I had some problems with a set of their older decals (p-51b?) falling apart when I tried to  use them.  Then I noticed that instead of being printed on the normal blue colored paper, they were printed on white, and also said "printed in the USA".

I reported it to them and requested a newer set that was "Made in Japan", and they worked fine.  I've never had a problem with the decals on the blue paper from Japan.

I've built this particular model and I have to agree with what everyone has siad so far. Tamiya decals are fine but be prepared to use lots of slovent. It usually takes a few applications to get them to thin out and penetrate panel lines, etc.. I'm sure you'll be happy with them, though.

my 1/48 F-51 decals reacted to NOTHING in the arsenal. The big sharmkouth jus sat there and grinned at me!

Years later, I picked up another Tamiya kit ( they dont make much that I like so I dont build many of thier kits) I tried a differnt tactic soaking the decals in hot water.  Worked great!. Now I do that to all of mine and they come out fine with little or no setting solutions.
