Update - Revell 1:32 Hawker Hunter, another decal question.
Posted by Viper Has The Lead on Saturday, December 29, 2007 8:12 AM
Hello again,
This is regarding the serial numbers on the undersurfaces, as can be seen from the pic, they are right over the undercarriage doors.
The decals for the letters and numbers are individuals, each with a border of clear film.
As mine is being done wheels 'down', what's the best way to handle this ?
Opinions, and any advice very welcome here.
All the best,
Mick C.

Hello again everyone,
Just thought I'd put up a couple of pictures of the finished efforts on this.

It wasn't something I'd like to make a habit of, but with a little patience and a very sharp blade, it worked out ok.
All the best,

Mick,

How well do the the doors fit into the openings?  If they actually do fit, I would put a small glob of HandiTac or silly putty into the gear bay so that when you put the door into the opening it rests on the stuff.  That will help hold the door in place so you can put the decals on as if it were one surface.  After the decals are dry, carefully cut them with a BRAND NEW blade to separate them where the doors meet the airframe.  Remove the doors, and voila!

Hello Frank,
Firstly, Happy New Year Smile [:)], thanks for the reply. I've done as you suggest and dry fitted the doors in place, Unfortunately, one of the four door pieces [the most important one] has 'attatchment' legs that are too long to allow a nice flush fit.
This will give you an idea of the door set up.
Not to worry though as I'll see if I can use your suggestion and some creative tempory door fixing, there is a little 'give' in the 'attatchment' legs, and I do own a hammer. LOL
Thanks for the help Frank, I'll pop back with an update later.
All the Best,
Mick C.

Hmmm... that does make it a bit more tricky.  Is it possible to remove the mounting lugs, and drill small holes for shaped wire to remount them?  Just a thought...

I'll look forward to seeing how it works out.  Keep us posted!

Hello again Frank,
Mega busy at work, so sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
The door fixing lugs were way to fragile to cut and drill. So I made up a set of templates that fit in the wheel well recesses, bit of Blu Tac and got a nice level surface. So problem sorted, err NO. if you look at the instruction image the position of the decals is TOTALLY wrong as they are the wrong size. Censored [censored] Now I'm going to have to work out where each number/letter goes relative to all the others and do them one at a time, cutting them wet and applying the offcut to it's proper door position. To add insult to injury, Revell have got ONE set of split decals for this area on the sheet, the Belgian featured aircraft, but NONE for any of the Brit birds. Don't you just love things like that happening. Banged Head [banghead]
I am a happy modeller (say 1000 times) Big Smile [:D]
All the best, will keep you posted on how this all goes.

Mick,

That's awful mate!  Sounds like Revell needs to fix their decal sheet to include the split markings for the British 'bird.  Good luck , sounds like your technique, though a PITA, should work out.  Chin up!

Hi Frank,
As promised, an update. Yes it was a PITA, but some very careful work with a new scapel blade and I managed to get it done. Big Smile [:D] Made some templates to give me a flat surface in the wheel wells, applied the decals. Thanks to Revell that was another PITA as the instruction sheet pics are way out of scale so no use to pin point the positions of the decals.
Some VERY nervy cutting while the decals were wet, (NOT something I want to do again). Then slip the pieces I wanted off the template and onto the doors. PHEW !! LOL
All looks ok though. Don't you just love the challanges of modelling.
Thanks for the input and interest, now to the CANOPY... arghhhhhh.....
All the best,
Mick C.

Sounds like a scary operation!  WIth precision like that required, perhaps a future career in microscopic surgery is in your future.  If you wouldn't mind, I'd love to see some pics when she's finished!  Glad to help, though not sure how much help I actually was.  Sounds like you have beaten a dragon there.  Way to go! Big Smile [:D]

How did the build go on your hunter? I am having issues with mine. I guess if and/or when I finish painting, I can look forward to the decals.

Hi Frank,
Firstly, all ideas suggestions and input are worth the effort, sometimes you're just looking to see if the option you have is the only one, or a bit of encouragement, and a post like this is always of use to someone heading down the same road. As it was things did work out, and again another lesson learned, more future planning might have given me a head's up on the problem. Will be trying to get a digital cam by the end of the month and will pop some pics up of the beast, lol.
All the best,
Mick C.

Good day Mig,
Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. Apart from my own rather blundering abilities, the Hunter build wasn't too bad really. It was quite a step up for me and I've decided to stick to 1:48 scale as these 1:32 birds are a little too big. What issues are you having ? If you want to PM me so we don't pull this post too far off topic, please do. Will send a PM with some early pics I managed to get of mine. Will expand a bit more in that.
Hope you get the Hunter finished, it's such a pretty aircraft Smile [:)] Sidney Camm it's designer said he thought it was his best work. He was right Thumbs Up [tup]
