Decal help!
Posted by Mike the Newbie on Monday, February 11, 2008 10:58 PM

Hello All -

New to all this but hoping get good at it soon.

Got a decal dilemma: I am trying to apply a sheet of Scale-Master decals but must be doing something wrong. I will probably need to do a closer trim job, but I did a test decal where I soaked it about 30 seconds, pulled it out with tweezers (on an unprinted corner) and then tried to push the decal off gently with a wet Q-tip.

Instead, I managed to flake off the image on the decal - it just eroded away.

What am I doing wrong? I had read in some other forum that a drop of liquid detergent in the water may help loosen the decal. I also read about how you can "paint" a solution on the decals to strengthen them.

Any ideas? Thank you very much!

It sounds like it was an old decal. On occasion when decalls get old, they shatter in the manner you describe. Superscale makes a product ( I cant remember the name of it at the moment) that you can coat decals with (before cutting/usage) to repair this.

Try using some of this:

Liquid decal film

I have used it on decals that were cracked into hundreds of little pieces and it allowed the decal to be applied as usual.  Just brush on a thin coat and voila!

Testors also makes decal sheet bonder in a spray can. Virtually the same thing, but much cheaper, is Krylon Crystal Clear. Just make sure the can is warmed, well agitated, and spray thing coats at least 6 inches from the decal sheet, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying another one.
