Apparently, ShurTape has an exclusive contract w/Sherwin Williams to distribute the tape.  If your local store doesn't have it in stock, they probably will in a very short time or can order it for you.  Another place that it might eventually show up is possibly Harbor Freight.  I was showing my purchases to one of the guys I work with (he builds and paints 1/1 street rods) and he mentioned that the only masking tape the local Harbor Freight store stocks is produced by ShurTape.

Stopped by my local Sherwin-Williams outlet the other day. Really scoured the place looking for the tape; none in sight. On one of those rare occasions when I did ask for directions, the guy in charge disappeared into the back and emerged with one and two inch rolls. My only message here is that if you don't see it, ask. Maybe my experience is not an isolated one.

I just picked up some myself.  I have never used Tamiya Tape but always wanted to try it.  I like this stuff much better than the blue tape I have been using.

Hi

Needless to say it is not available here in South Africa, or at least not as far as any of my building / hardware stores can tell me. I sent the manufacturer an email to find out if there was a South African distributor but so far no response.

Should I hear anything I shall post it here for any South African modellers benfit.

Regards

David

Hit my local Sherwin Williams store yesterday and yup...they had it. I bought two rolls and promptly masked one of my builds and it's a dead ringer for Tamiya tape. Great find Ed!

A guy at my local IPMS Canada meeting showed this stuff off about a week ago, but my local Sherwin-Williams doesn't have that variety of tape.

None at Home Depot here in CA, either.  Guess I'm heading to Sherwin-Williams tomorrow.  I'm gonna stock up as the price is way, way better than Tamiya...

Ed,

Thanks for the heads up!  I read your post above, and I walked right out the door.  There is a Sherwin Williams couple of blocks away from me.  I picked up a 2 inch x 60 yard (48mm x 50m) roll of Shurtape Gold for $11.99.  That is less than half of what I would have paid for two tiny rolls of 10mm x 10m Tamiya tape, and I get much more for the money.

Zapme,

Check Shurtape's website for info.  Below is a direct link to the Gold tape's product information page.

Maybe they can direct you to a dealer down under.  Cheers.

Ed - thanks.  A 2 inch roll of this stuff should last a while a be a whole bunch cheaper than Tamiya's tape.  I'm a big fan too of buying stuff that maybe wasn't intended for (or marketed as) modelling, but of course, it's often the same old stuff and works just as well.  Thanks for the heads-up!

Scored a roll at Sherwin Williams today. Same as Tamiya tape, great bargain, thanks.

I saw this over on HS. Put down the comp and out the door I went to see if Lowes had any. Nope. Sherwin Williams store is open tomorrow from 10am to 2pm. I'm going to go look there.

Alternative to Tamiya Tape

Sounds like heresy, doesn't it?

On the DIY Channel program 'Cool Tools' there was a segment on Shurtape's Razor Edge Gold premium masking tape (CP-60).

From the description & video it sure looked & sounded like Tamiya's masking tape.   I googled and found the product spec, and this afternoon I hit a couple of the paint supply shops in the area.

I found some at the local Sherwin Williams store.  It comes in 3 different widths on standard masking tape cores.   I picked up a roll of 1 inch X 60yards (24mm X 55m) for about six bucks.

It is the same material as Tamiya tape, same paper, adhesive, flexibility.  Shurtape says it can remain on for 60 days.

It has the benefit of being less expensive than the Tamiya.  A quick search of the SMO website showed that an 18mm X 18meter roll of tape cost the same as the roll of Shurtape's tape, for 3 times the quantity.   Narrower strips can be cut with an Xacto & a straight edge.

Once again it pays to shop around and not limit your modeling purchases to only those items with a model manufacturer's logo.

Oh, and for those of you on the continent,  Shurtape looks to be a European-based company so you should be able to find it through distributors over there.
