Good find vetteman, beuty shops are also where you'll find methel methacryate nail acrylics, the resin is useful for some casting jobs and the powder alone added to Ca glue makes a fast building super hard filler. My approach to modeling is a wholistic one in that I never really stop modeling.  One eye is always looking for some kind of material, tool, or brick-a brack that I can use in building. Most things work some don't, some work with a bit of modifying. The point is the search is never over, put yourself in the shoes of the first guy who thought, "I'm gonna put vinegar on my decals and melt those lil buggers onto my model".
The devil is in the details...and somtimes he's in my sock drawer. On the bench. Airfix 1/24 bf109E scratch conv to 109 G14AS MPC1/24 ju87B conv to 87G Rev 1/48 B17G toF Trump 1/32 f4u-1D and staying a1D Scratch 1/16 TigerII.

I had similar issues one time when I was rebuilding an aquarium pump. The instuctions recomended using a dab of nail polish on the tiny screws to keep them place so the vibration from the pump won't losen them. I got some odd looks at the store when I went to pick out a bottle and then more when I went to the check-out counter. The topper was when some friends dropped by a few days later and the bottle was still sitting on my table....I live alone!

On my workbench now:

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?

PhD. The job has its perks, but the job satisfaction caused by tangible results is not among them. I've been known to work very hard for months and years with nothing to show for it, except some papers with my name on them. Maybe somebody somewhere use my papers some time to get a result, but I never get to know, let alone see it.

Which is accounts for at least 80% of my motivation for getting back to the modeling hobby: When you get something right, you know instantly. When you mess up, you have to face the music right there and then. The time scale with modeling is fast (hours and days), so you see progression from your efforts.

Oh well.

The old ladies at my neighborhood beauty supply place were starting to give me funny looks.. So now I just have the girlfriend buy my stuff there.

Right... I've been to the local pharmacy a few times the past couple of weeks. First to get 10 ml dose cups (for mixing paint, but the girls behind the counter don't know that), then syringes (for measuring paint, but the girls behind the counter don't know that) and then syringe needles  (for gun barrels etc, but the girls behind the counter don't know that). Tell me 'bout funny looks...

Anyway, I made a decision to do all the pharmacy shopping in the same pharmacy, so the girls behind the counter should be used to this guy buying all the 'weird' stuff.

I am only 35-40 minutes from San Francisco as well. We both have weird cities nearby. Laugh [(-D]

Nice find Randy. I've been using all types of nail files from that section. The ones with the three grades is excellent. All kinds of good stuff there for the finding. Never saw those particular tips but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks.

I have to admit the ladies at the corner beauty shop know me well by now as I get a lot of my building supplys there. So I wandered in today for some acrylic nail files ( aka polishing sticks) and found some really nice Q-Tips. I had been using the well known ones ya get at the drug store in the baby section, as you know they fall apart readly and leave fibers all over the place, not a good thing. You do know the ladies have to have their war paint tools perfect LOL. I have a model that had a foggy canopy because future had leaked under the masking so a bit of 91% alcohol and some rubbing and I now have a clear canopy on my P-40B. I had tried that with the regular q-tips and made the mess worse because they fell apart.  These did not fall apart in fact they are very firm and kept their pointed tip very well. Just thought I would share this here and heres a picture of them.
