My thoughts exactly. Here are some that I use regularly. I believe these are what John is talking about:

Clamps can be useful as well as potentially destructive to your project. When I need a broad flat clamp I use office clamps.  Otherwise I use clothespins, some which I reverse to get a longer jaw. For heavy duty I use mini Quick Grip beam clamps. 

Also take a look at clamp style hair pins.
