Anyone know where you can get a good punch set, I read somewhere Waldron isn't around anymore?

You can get the Waldron sets from Roll Models and Micro Mark has a much cheaper set.

Waldron was acquired by Roll Models a while back. They never left, just changed zip codes.

Funny how folks remember the closing, but don't pay any attention of the opening.

I have the set from Micro-Mark and it works great for me.

I had the same question a few months back, and after checking to old post in the olld forum I came across a thread that said that there was another alternative.  LF Tandy makes leather punches but they make a mini set that reatils for 14.99 CDN at Micheals (just picked mine up today, yay for 40% off coupons!!!).  The sizes are from 11/64" to 5/64".  From what i've heard they work just as well as the Waldron set, but they aere  a fraction of the price and usually easier to find.

Perhaps the most important lesson I have learned is that you should never argue with an idiot. The people around you may not be able to tell the difference.

i picked up the leather punch set at michaels...the real difference is the leather punch set punches a circle around the piece and you have to then take it out of the punch and i makes it kind of concave..not flat...the other punch will punch the piece itself out...i took t back and ordered the micro mark set...just made sense...

and the micro mark set goes down to 1mm and 1.5mm..the other one only went down to 2mm...

I have the (less expensive than Waldron) MicroMark set, and I'm happy with it, but it came without anything showing the diameters of the punches.  Neither the punches nor the die have any markings on them.  I'll get around to making a plate to store with it some day, but so far, it hasn't been a major issue.

I think you're right, but I haven't bothered to mark them yet.  I've eyeballed, when I've used them.

One other minor item is that the MicroMark set comes in little clear plastic bags, so you'll have to come up with a box for storage on your own.  I use those little tin mint boxes, like Altoids come in, for storing things like my X-Acto blades, and pre-cut pieces of fine-grit sandpaper.  They fit nicely into my tool box.  But for the punch set, I went to Michael's and bought a little unfinished pine box with a hinged lid, and I'm adding an insert with holes drilled to hold the punches, with space left over to stow the tap plate and base.

Despite those minor items, I love the set.  Beats using drills to make little round holes in sheet stock Smile  I think you'll get a lot of use out of it, enjoy!

got mine today...I was stoked till the 1mm punch wont go through its hole...fun...and the 1.5mm punch hole in the plexi needed some clean up...guess what else...there is some small rust spots on 2 other punches....great...they better not make me have to pay for shipping to send it back and get another one...i already paid $8.95 and i know it cost about $3-4 to ship...i will call them in a bit and see what happens...

Hi Everyone,

I've got both the Waldron & Micromark and I cannot tell the difference when it comes to using them. If only I read this post earlier I could of saved some on the Waldron. I stole a small tupperware container from the wife and keep the MM set in that.

Cheers-Leo

Same for me on my set that came in last week.  I was delighted until I found that the largest and two smallest punches did not line up with the die.  The plex guide is pretty beat up too.  I emailed them and to their credit they answered back the next day.

Here is the reply:   "The plastic guide is generally fairly scuffed up, but the holes should all align perfectly so that the punches can pass through the guide plate and into the die holes. I would suggest returning the unit you received for replacement (which would be inspected/tested), please see the backside of the package invoice for return form."  The backside return instruction says that shipping will not be reimbursed.

To be fair, here is my question:  "I recently purchased a precision hole punch set from you for detailing
instrument panels.  The metal base and punches are just fine, but the alignment of the plexiglas guide seems off.  Is this typical?  I realize this is a mid-range product in price compared to the Waldron sets, but I  am surprised at the poor lineup with the die and the guide.  The largest diameter punch and the two smallest punches cannot be used because of the line up problem.  In the two smallest holes in the plex, the bore is very rough, with tearout on one side around the hole.  The whole plex sheet is pretty scratched and beat up.  I attached some pictures to show both the line-up problem and the what the condition of the plex guide is after coming out of the package. "

That catalog picture does not show a scuffed up plate, should I be happy with something less?.  I also felt like the tone of the reply was that they didn't believe me, and they really did not seem to acknowledge inconveniencing a customer.  I don't care to pay shipping back to them and delay a project further so they can "inspect" the problem.  Micro Mark usually has good stuff at higher-end prices, but now they are certainly a last option in all my purchases.

If I hear anything else I will post here again, to be fair to all.

Back to the magnifier (and polishing out the plex guide plate!)

You should have dipped it in Future Big Smile

Sorry, just teasing!  I would have contacted them, too.  That is a set that never should have made it through quality control at the factory.

I thought about that!  Future has saved me many times.  But I was able to wet sand it down pretty well, ending with a polishing stick finish that is slightly translucent.  It is perfectly useful now.  I don't know what to do about the off-center guide hole though, other than not using any 1 mm, 1.5 mm, or the monster punch.  Maybe I will just make a new guide plate...

Cheers,

Rob
