Rubber Cement for masking?

I tried rubber cement and it left a ragged line. I was told that the cement can also attack plastic so I guess I was plain lucky!

The Humdrol stuff is good for sealing the lines on masking tape etc. I use it on the locater pins, holes in kits where parts attach so I don't have to scrape the paint away.

It removes easier than rubber cement as well. Generally I apply it with a cotton swab on large areas or a toothpick depending on the application, but it can be removed from brushes with a thinner I believe, just not sure what though!

I've never had good luck with Liquid Mask-plus it ruins brushes, and rubber cement is just bad (toxic) news.

I use it for masking complex windows and canopies, mainly on armor. I've tried it as a camouflage mask, with poor results. Rubber cement, also, gave poor results (marred the finish on my paint...enamels, btw).

And they use a lot of enamel paints...a lot of "plastics" guys now use all acyclic which has a weaker adhesion (esp within hrs) and who waits :)

Use the masking liquids for the job, they last a long time (so don't moan about cost )..eg Mr Maskit or Humbrol Maskol...and it does not pull your brass off either :)

A lot of railroad modelers use rubber cement to get a chipped paint effect on buildings. Paint the base coat the color they want showing thru the chips, add splotches of rubber cement when paint dry, apply coat of top color and when dry use tape to pull the rubber cement off the surface leaving a chipped appearance. My suggestion would be to experiment with it on an old model or a piece of styrene.
