The Nikon 8800 has been discontinued. I researched this at length and you can check it out above, great site.  I was recommended to buy the FZ30 Lumix by Panasonic.  I absolutely cannot say enough about this digital cam.  Incredible, 12Xoptical zoom, best on the market.  Very highly rated camera.  Check it out.

Have a look at the reviews at Cnet.com

You willbe able to do side by side compasrisons of competing brands and models.  I alwys look here before any electronics purchase and have never been burned with their recommendations.

It is a pretty good camera from what I believe. Nikons are a good make. I had a Nikon 4300 (and 2 Nikons before that) and recently upgraded and did a lot of investigating before I spent my hard earned $$. I got a lot of details from www.dpreview.com.

The one I settled on though was a Canon PowerShot S2 IS.

What sold me was that it was about $100 cheaper, a year newer in technology, much bigger zoom and image stabilisation. It's only 5M pixels rather than 8M pixels, but 5 is plenty in my opinion. The bigger zoom will allow me to get close ups of things that I can't get physically close to - like aircraft in museums etc. Image stabilisation will help to get good quality photos at high zoom as well. There is info about the one I chose at the dpreview site as well.

Anyways, read the info and make your own decision based on what you think you will use the camera for. Hope this info helps.

I purchased one as I owned several Nikon argentic cameras before ( F3 ) so I was a Nikon addict; but I  purchased  a  8800 a short time later as I think it is best suited for models, and better achieved than the 8700 overall . This is my humble advice : go for the 8800 if you have the budget ( or D70, or...)
Don't misunderstand me, I don't think the 8700 is crap but there are some "shortcomings" you won't find on the 8800

Thank you all for coming José
