Display Cabinet
Posted by Bones-coa on Saturday, July 1, 2006 9:11 AM
Modelers, I'm looking for a stand-up display cabinet to put in our new den for models.  My wife is being good about this as long as it's a nice looking cabinet.  I'm looking for a wood contructed cabinet with glass doors.  The thing is, I don't want something too nice and/or that costs $1000.  My limit is maybe $500.  Everything I've found is, at least to me, way overpriced for what you get.  Anyone have any ideas or sources for some decent cabinets like this?

Thanks.

I don't know how I started getting this catalog, but it does have some nice cabinets in it. Here is a link to there web site. Take a look around it. You never know what you might see.

Well, I don't know exactly what you are looking for. With a spending limit of $500. you certainly can get a really nice looking piece of furniture to blend in with the decor of the new den. You might want to look at such pieces as curio cabinets, hutches, maybe a wall entertainment unit with some display shelves, etc...

Take a look at this post in odds & ends pertaining to modeling Display cases...

I bought a real nice shelf from Lowes that you put together. It's about 7 ft tall and has a dark wood finish. Costs around $100. My wife approved of itBig Smile [:D]

You might check out furniture stores in your area who special order cabinets.  Over the years I've managed to pick up some extremely good deals from upscale furniture stores who have special ordered a cabinet for a customer.  When the item arrived at the store it had been damaged in shipment and the customer refused to accept it.  Rather than ship it back, some stores will put the item up for sale at a steep discount.  What I did at the two stores I bought cabinets from, was to make friends with a sales person and let them know what I was looking for.  One of the cabinets I got down in Florida from Haverty's had a slight nick on the top rear.  I'm not what anyone would consider a wood working expert, but I was able to repair the nick to the point its practically invsible.  The cabinet had a original sticker price of $1200 and I got it for $450. Its definitely a quality piece of furniture the wife had no problem with me bringing into the house; in fact its in the diniing room.  This particular cabinet is about 8' x 4' x 2.5' and was for china. I had to get more glass shelves but now have around 20-25 1/48th planes and three 1/350th ships in it.

Even if you're not into wood working you could probably find someone who could repair a damaged cabinet. You might have to wait a while before the store gets something you are interested in, but the wait was well worth it for me.
