picked up a few goodies today
Posted by MaxPower on Sunday, July 16, 2006 8:07 PM
I was at the hobby store today and I got a roll of Tamiya masking tape, some squadron sanding sticks and some paint stirrers with a little spoon on one end.

I thought I'd try the Tamiya tape after hanging out at this forum awhile and reading that alot of people do. I used regular masking tape usually and I find it very hard to cut once it's on as I can't see through it. I haven't used it yet but we'll see if I like it. I bought the 10mm roll.

Also the sanding sticks are my first time trying them. I've read they're awesome. My wife laughed at me and said they were the most expensive nail files she's ever seen. Blush [:I] They look great but I think some contours and shapes would be awkward so I'll have paper on hand as well.

The Tamiya paint stirrers. They were $6 and when I saw them a few months ago I couldn't believe somebody would pay that for them. But I hate cutting up plastic to stir with and there's a spoon on the end that will be perfect for adding a few drops of thinner. Plus I'll allways have just the right thing to stir my paints with.

I bought my wife a box of chocolotes while I was out to keep the peace! Laugh [(-D]

Edit: could a mod edit my typo in the thread title? Blush [:I]

You should be able to edit your own post subject.

I'm one of those that swear by Tamiya Tape, I think you'll like it.

I bought some of those Squadron sticks before, and I found they seemed to not last very long, I've also bought some Flexifile brand with the same problem. They were about the same cost, which is quite expensive! I've tried the nail file types from the drugstore and for coarse sanding they are great! They were gigantic but no match for my scissors. But they don't come in the finer grits. I bought a pack of sanding sticks at the LHS the other day that had 5 sticks of varying coarseness and so far they're the best I've bought. Forgot the name of them already though. I'll stop in at the LHS tomorrow and find out. They were almost as cheap as the drugstore kind. The thing I like about the drugstore ones is I don't mind cutting them to fit the job at hand.

With all the left over sprue I have it's hard for me to justify the cost of a Tamiya stir spoon. I use Tamiya Thin glue to soften one end of the sprue and squish it flat to help scrape any lumps off the bottom.

If I brought chocolates home for my wife, I would have to explain why... Whistling [:-^]

So long folks!

Yea, me too.  Go figure

The tape and sanding sticks will be the greatest asset you have so far. These are the everyday tools that we all use. You'll love them. As for the stir thing, The tones of sprue I have will never run out. I throw out very little. Never know when a part in the spares box will save a project.

Take this plastic and model it!

The paint stirrers are cool because the have the flat paddle shape that is great for scraping off the bottom but also I can scrape almost all the paint off on the edge of the jar so I found stirring wasted less paint. The spoon end is nice for getting a few drops of pain or thinner. I know I could have found the same thing for a lot less but the time spent looking for it to me isn't worth it, I'd rather just spend the little bit more and be done with it. The big thing is I was getting lazy and started to shake my paints rather than stir so I'm happy with these.

The sanding sticks I did use a bit tonight and overall I liked them. Not great for small parts and I'm hesitant to cut them up. The buffing one does a great job.

Didn't use the tape, but I did pull a piece off and checked it out. Really liked how I could see through it, and it seemed softed and more pliable than masking tape.

The chocolate isn't to cover anthything up, I'm allways honest with my wife what I spend. But I took off without the kids for a few hours of nice shopping, leaving her at home, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't too selfish!!

The key to buying chocolates for your wife if no questions asked is to do it often enough for no other reason than she's your wife.

I really like the sanding sticks and I agree they do cost way too much for what it is. The 3-grit buffer stick for final polishing is available in the beauty section though.
