Before resorting to vendor shows and collector sites, be sure to check with the magazines themselves. Wings/Aipower, for example, certainly one of the modeler's best friends, has put all their back issues (over 30 years worth) on DVD. The British mags which, next to FSM, are the best model mags to be had, are very conscientious about keeping stocks of back issues. So don't waste money on so-called "collectors items" from hucksters at model shows. And, as I keep repeating over and over on the a/c site, check out garage sales and library sites for the most accurate references of all: wartime National Geographics. Not just WW II, but Korea and Vietnam, as well as their issues from the Cold War years. They were absolutely fascinated by aircraft and carriers, as well as X-planes. And the color reproduction, even back during WW II, is outstanding. You can't get more accurate sources than photos taken while the a/c were in acual wartime operation.
