If'n you done gotcherself tangled up'n that-there whole Mustang Ranch affair, you'd best be armed with whatever ya'll can find...

Here's a listing of links to sites or pages which you fellas may find helpful in building your Stangs...

Kit Reviews, Previews, Critiques & Built-Up Galleries

P-51 Walkarounds & Details

North American P-51D Mustang - This is a composite walkaround with shots of at least two, maybe three, different aircraft. As always, be cautious when using restored aircraft as a reference; these are, in essence, 1/1 models and the guys who restore them can make mistakes, just like us...

North American P-51 - This is a small walkaround of a Stang in Canadian markings. There are a few detail shots here which would be helpful to most modelers...

P-51 Detail Shots - Unfortunately this series of pages has deteriorated since I first found it. There were tons of images here, not all great, but all were useful. Most of them are gone now, but what remains could be helpful to someone...

CAF P-51C Mustang - This is an interesting walkaround on the IPMS USA website which illustrates the ill-fated P-51C 'Tuskegee Airmen'.

Red-Tail Mustang - Not really a walkaround, but there are a few good shots of the very well done cockpit of 'Tuskegee Airmen'. 'Tis a shame they had put the second seat in, ( Angry [:(!] ) and an even bigger shame that she wound up a crumpled heap and that we lost a pilot... Disapprove [V]

P-51D Walkaround - This is a directory page with walkaround photos of a P-51D. The walkaround is part of a registered-users-only site on which, for some reason, I'm unable to successfully register. Anyhoo, the images are still accessible directly from this directory. The subject aircraft is finished in the markings of 'Kit' Carson's 'Nooky Booky IV' and is a non-standard restoration. certain details, like the cockpit, are not finished to the original standards. Nevertheless, this is an interesting view and there are some images which would be useful...

P-51D Mustang Walkaround - Small photos, not the best quality, but useful...

P51 Mustang Construction - This is a series of six webpages which have selected scanned pages from an original P-51 construction manual.

Markings & Unit Research

Little Friends - This is an excellent site which deals with the fighter units which were part of the Mighty Eighth during WWII.

Web Birds.com is a site covering mostly WWII USAAF units in all theatres; ETO, MTO, PTO & CBI. Almost all the USAAF aircraft types are covered here, the Stang included. If you know which unit you're after, go to town...

Bud Anderson's P-51 Mustang 'OLD CROW' Web Page - This might fit in a bit better under the 'General P-51 Sites' category, but it deals almost exclusively with the 'Yoxford Boys' and the photo coverage and info included goes way beyond what most general interest sites offer, so here 'tis...

The P-51 Mustangs of WWII USAAF Ace Major George Preddy - A classic research article; no images whatsoever. But, from what I can see, the information here is good...

WALKAROUND & DETAIL SHOTS

P-51D/K & F-6D

By request:

Here's a shot of a seat from a restored F-6D, 'Lil' Margaret'. This would be the same seat as used in the P-51D/K.

There's few restored aircraft which I would use as a reference source; 'Lil' Margaret' is one of the few...

This view shows the area directly behind the seat before the installation of the radio...

Build Subjects

The photos below will all show the actual aircraft which Mustang Ranch GB participants are planning to build...

Butz

This is Dave Perron's 'Little Bitch', a P-51B of the 362nd FS, 357th FG. Perron went MIA in this aircraft after a midair with another Mustang due to bad weather on April 1st, 1944.

newtothegame & sanderson_91

Both these fellas are planning to build Pierce McKennon's 'Ridge Runner' of the 335th FS, 4th FG.

This first shot shows 'Ridge Runner', the second of McKennon's Mustangs to carry that name. On March 18th, 1945, McKennon bailed out of this aircraft near Berlin but was picked up by squadron mate George Green. Green took off his parachute and flew back to Debden while sitting on McKennons lap.

McKennon was also shot down while flying the first 'Ridge Runner', in August of 1944 but made it back to England with the help of the French Underground.

These next three shots show 'Ridge Runner III'. Notice the two parachutes to the rear of the razorback denoting the two instances when McKennon had to hit the silk...

(I'm in the middle of a bit of research on 'Mac's Mustangs and have discovered that the image directly below has been identified by some as 'Ridge Runner IV'... I have my doubts but will hopefully be able to verify this soonly...)

Model Grandpa

Model Grandpa is building a 348th FG P-51D flown by Bill Banks. Banks commanded the 342nd FS and later became the 348th group CO. He was one of the original pilots who debuted the P-47 in combat in the SWPA and he completed two combat tours.

All Banks' aircraft were called 'Sunshine'; I dunno which one MG is builidng, but here's a few shots of 'Sunshine VII'...

Note that in this next shot, the spinner has only three colors, while in the first two photos it has four colors.

Taken from P-51 Mustang Nose Art Gallery by John & Donna Campbell - Norm Taylor photo

The four color spinner was indicative of a ship within the Group HQ flight and, although this next shot is not 'Sunshine VII', it does show the colors that would have been carried on the spinners of 348th FG HQ aircraft.

TimL

Tim is building a 23rd FG P-51B/C and wants to finish it in the markings of a ship flown by 'Tex' Hill. Here's the same shot that Tim posted in the build thread, although this is a larger image. Most of my sources call this a P-51C.

Taken from North American P-51 Mustang: A Photo Chronicle by Larry Davis - USAF photo

I believe that the aircraft in this next shot is the same one as above, although the photo was taken at a different time. The exhaust shrouds are present here, while they're missing in the shot above. However, the wear marks and chipping paint are similar if not identical in many places, and the sharkmouth also appears to be identical in appearance and in detail in both images.

Taken from Wings of Fame Volume 1

Now, Tim mentioned the name 'Bull Frog' as being the name of the aircraft that he wants to build. This is, so far, the only image I've come across which shows a P-51B/C from the CBI named 'Bull Frog'. As can be seen, the sharkmouth on this aircraft is of a completely different style than that of the aircraft shown above. I'm afraid that this creates more questions than it does answers. I'll see if I can try and figure it out...
