Lovely looking build, a very good job. And this is the first build i have seen with the yellow patch on the wing. I only found out about this at the end of last year, nice to see it on a build.

Yes, the cockpit is very narrow and was even more so when the Spitfire first came out as the canopy was flat and not bulged as it appears here.

Why it's none other than 'Skeets' going in for the kill.

Thx everyone for the comments.

Wow! that is one of the, if not the, best looking Spit I've seen! Beer  Having it done wheels up is a nice change, did a great job on the pilot too.  I REALLY like the underside weathering, showing all the oil/fluid leaks and shell stains, just an overall great job.

Very nice job!! I too like to depict a particular pilot, exploit or battle rather than just something out of the box. The Spitfire is also one of my favourite subjects.

Isn't that yellow patch a "gas warning" indicator?

Manstein's revenge

Isn't that yellow patch a "gas warning" indicator?

Yes, that is correct.  They were applied either of two ways, painted directly onto aircraft or a square piece of fabric treated with the special paint was doped into place using a red primer around the borders (the latter is how I've depicted it here).

When exposed to a chemical agent, the patch would turn a pink colour.  This would warn the ground crew that the aircraft had flown in a chemical warfare environment.  As someone has suggested, it would also warn the pilot in a scenario where his own base airfield had been attacked with some form of poison gas.

There isn't much info on the subject, but this special marking seems to have disappeared by the spring of 1941.  Although there is some photo evidence of this being used afterwards in the form of an irregular shaped splotch both on aircraft and vehicles.

Thx again all.

regards,

Jack

Jack:

Great job! And yeah the gas warning paint is interesting- don't think I've seen it on an aircraft before.

I first saw this patch during a visit to the BBMF at the end of last year. being a modeller, it caught my attention, so i had to ask waht it was. And according to our guide, it wasn't used for very long.

Here it is on the BBMF Spit

I woundered if i would get to see one on a model. And now i have.

That's a great build! The paint, the decaling, the weathering, and your attention to detail - excellent. I like the gear-up positioning too. You don't see that quite so much - really goes far in showing off the clean lines of the Spit. Yes
