HisNHer Tanks

I think I can sum up this whole thread's future in one word.

Men!.

You should already know how it was pronounced.

I've never bought the 'not me' or the 'I dunno' defense either.

hey, you are not the only female on these forums. I for one have no problem with the "little boys" on this site. Mind over matter, HisNHer. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter! Surprise

In my job, I am part of a team that maintains a private forum.  Our forum is very much like this one, instead of discussing sprue and paint, our members discuss foliage and vases. It is a forum for professional florist (world wide).  We have the exact type of discussions there as we do here with one major exception.

Very few complain about the forum itself, picture hosting, post  count, ranking system, tags and so on. We even use the same forum software that FSM uses.

We average three-thousand , logged on, active users a day.  Our total member count is just over 26,000.  You would think since our forum is private and NOT free, they would complain more.  They do not.  Through discussions with our members over likes and dislikes about the forum,  we discovered what we already knew.

All these little extras, like post counts, are just tools in a toolbox.  No different than a tool at our workbench.  Some of us find them useful other don't.  Nothing says you have to use it.  However,  If the mere presence  of a free "tool" hinders your productivity then IMO the problem is not the tool but your ability to focus.

I rarely see more than 35 users logged on to FSM forums at one time.  Discussions, [check that], public complaints, like these will surely affect traffic.

People like a variety of tools.  Take them away or limit their use and you will lose them.  I know because we see it here day in day out.  My 2 cents

OK, so a dupes couldn't post anything from his smartphone, so I PM's Aaron on his behalf. This is the reply I got and it did enable dupes to post from his smartphone (and I assume the IPad would work the same way?):

"Tell your friends to set their user profile to use the text only editor. That should allow them to post."

Hope that is helpful and useful (...and not post count inflating...)Tongue Tied

I have found that if I press the HTML option in the reply block on my phone and Galaxy Tab 7 I can add text. Give it a try and see if it works.

Sorry that does not help the post count debate but it might help you up your count if you can get it to work.Wink

Boyd, you should post this as a separate post in the O&E's section--I'm sure there are a lot of people who would want to know this, but may not ever look into this thread.

I'm surprised that someone in the FSM offices didn't post it as a "Sticky"? It should be up there to inform people of how to access from those devices.

I made that change in my profile. It does allow me to post from my iPad. The trade-off is now when I try to post from my desktop/laptop I get a screen full of HTML code.

Thanks for the info. It was both useful and helpful! :)

On the I- pad this is what I have been doing:

First hit the reply button

Then close the browser,go to your notepad, type your message, and select all and copy

Open the browser then paste your notes in the reply box.

It takes longer, but it works in the pinch,I think Doogs or someone explained it in the forum suggestions forum.

Manstein's revenge

 the doog:

Two years ago I joined a motorcyclist forum; when I browsed for answers to a particular problem I needed help with, I noticed that there were people who had high post counts and they were generally more forthcoming and helpful in their responses. I found that I came to rely upon these members for getting help with a sometimes obscure question, and I've found that this generally applies to most other forums I've visited of various nature. "Veteran" members can be counted on to help with understanding the peculiarities of the forum as far as posting. weird quirks, or best ways to post a question or best forums in which to do so.

The sad thing is that on this forum, there seems to be a genuine "rush" to boost post counts by some members who post the most trivial, useless material--whether intentionally or not, in the spirit of "socializing" or not.. Honestly, sometimes it seems as if they just can't help themselves, even after being made aware of it.  In this case, the potential and possibility of post counts meaning anything at all is greatly diminished by "one word posts" or "three word posts". It's quality over quantity, period.

I personally HAVE used post counts on various forums to identify veteran members who can help with navigating a new forum or may be knowledgeable of people who CAN help answer an oblique question, and by the same token, I have often identified new members who may be unfamiliar with the various personalities and/or proclivities of certain members or unaware of how to best post a question or photos--whatever--and have used that to better determine an appropriate response.

So are they "useless"? NO. Unless they are rendered meaningless by gratuitous posting.

At the risk of increasing my post count....

So, is that a "keep 'em" or "toss 'em," doog?  You aren't gonna avoid coming down on a position are you? Wink

How about we include the average number of words per post as an additional stat ...that way a "newbie" can seek out those who are "serious" vs "non-serious" posters?  Sorta be like a "batting average" for all you baseball fans out there.

Also we could look into computer programming that could analyze words in a post and give an average "serious post rating" to each member...maybe on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being "Deadly serious" and 1 being "Pure MOJO"...?

So it would look something like this:

Von Joe Blow

Posts:                  10,023

Avg # words/pst:      12.5

Seriousness rating:  4.3

I dunno-----I'm diggin' it---just sayin'...

By the way, where does are most serious offender stand? Wink Tigerman?

And this coming from the inventor of the one and three-word threads, not to mention: Zuiho, Ho and 229 comments. Hmmmmm Hmm

I'm probably responsible for some of this.    I talked back channel with mfsob about the frustration we've felt about how some forum participants seem to go out of their way to post inane drivel on a wide variety of subjects.    Many of which they appear to have no idea of which they are talking about.   They also often hijack threads and drive the subject off course.   Our feeling was that some post their banal fluff to pad their post count,  and in doing so provides no added value to the forum

I've read through the posts on this thread and there are others which appear to feel similarly.   There are some who have responded which said that they use the post count to identify knowledgeable people.    I agree with that to some extend,  but there is more to it than a quantity - there should be a corresponding quantity.

Unlike the Soviet system under Stalin,  quantity does not have a quality of its own.

I think it was Doog in one of his posts in this thread who mentioned his desires to help.   I've followed some of his posts and he is generally expansive and helpful in his responses.   Others; Bondoman, Grovonius, Grigg are similarly helpful.   I've not followed Tigerman because he doesn't go to ships often,  but what I've read from him he too seems helpful and expansive in his responses

Others seem to delight in glib, banal responses.    Not just on fluff subjects,  but on some serious/modeling issues.

So the question goes to you who have said that you use the post count to evaluate a poster's worth,  do you go strictly by the post count or do you go by the name and reputation of the responder?    It was Sy Symms, the suit salesman who used to say in his TV commercials that  an educated consumer knows the value of a brand name.   If you reply truthfully I believe that most of you, the educated consumer,  will go by the poster's reputation for good, straight-forward, accurate information over one-word fluff.

Keep the count or get rid of it - I don't use it.  If you keep it, there should be a measure of quality associated with it.    I'd  propose something like a Post Quality Quotient.  The PQQ would be the quotient of the total words posted (excluding quoted text) divided by the total post count.     Someone who averages 100 words per post over 5000 posts would have a higher PQQ than someone with 13000 posts averaging 5 words or less

Okay, now you are just stealing my ideas...go back a few pages and read what I proposed.  This gives me an idea:  We could have a score also for "post originality"...

Not to beat a dead horse (any further than it already has); but what good does the post count really do for us anyway??  I mean regardless of whether someone has a high post count or not, if you spend enough time here in the forums you learn who is knowledgeable and who is full of crap!  Not that the two are mutually exclusive! Big Smile

I've been here since 2003 and have a whopping 310 (counting this one).  I'll leave it to history to determine which category I fall into (Knowledgeable or Full of crap).  I'm sure i'll have lots of company in the "full of Crap" line!  Big Smile

I'm going to be the voice of dissent and say I find the post count to be very useful at times.

Not at the high side. I could care less. Some people post a lot. Some people have been posting for a long time. Others have been doing both. Awesome. Let's give them ding dongs (or in Manny's case, ho-hos).

Where I find it useful is when someone has a post count in the single digits. Just one small factor, but I'm a lot more hesitant to put a ton of time into a response to someone asking "tell me how to do weathering?" with a total of two posts to their name, because who knows if they'll even be back to read it? Doesn't mean I won't respond, but I won't go "all-in", and will usually try a qualifying question to 1) see if there's a response and 2) narrow down the topic.

So from that standpoint, yes, I find post counts very handy. Though I could care less if they just stopped at 1000+.

Your comments have much validity and I agree with your viewpoint. The fact is post counts are relatively benign and as such are just another source of info about the commenter that can be taken into account; or not. No harm, no foul.
