Improve Forum Experience---recalibrate those little, green bars!
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 18, 2011 12:10 AM

Okay, you know those eight little bars under your avatar pic that are either empty or filled in with green? How come someone with less than 11,000 posts (like the doog---no disrespect intended; just using you as the first example I found) has all their's filled in, and so does someone like me with more than 13,000 posts??? I say recalibrate those little bars to the highest poster (tigerman, who would have all his filled in), and then they would be more accurate for the rest of us in visually indicating the level of posting we have done...

They are a little confusing. Both yours, Doog, and mine say we're Top 10 contributors, which I would assume means were in the Top 10 percentage wise in posts.

Yeah, when--IMO--there should be more distinction between us with the bars.  I mean doog is at 10k plus, I am at 13k plus and you are pushing 20k posts, yet all three of us have all 8 bars lit up...

Stop cyber bullying.

FSM has lost control of the playground.  This vile pollution is spreading across the whole of their site.  Its time that they step in and reassert themselves.   Establish and enforce rules of behavior, swift and effective!.   FSM's reputation is being further diminished  with each of these bully attacks.

You're on a tear, aren't you, Ed?  No bullying in here (yet).  Just making a valid suggestion.  Someone else even asked about those bars in another thread.  Don't appreciate your implying that this thread is bullying at all...maybe you are the bully in this case?

I have to agree with Manny here. He hasn't attacked anyone. This thread doesn't appear pointed to anyone either and sure seems non-threatning.

If you highlight the bar Owl, it's says you are a top 500 contributor. out of some 55,000 members, you are in the top 500 in actual posts. Each bar doesn't represent a 1000 posts per say.

I guess that is one way to look at it. The more posts, the more bars, because you become a higher contributor.

I think they ought to reflect signal to noise ratio instead.

Ummm...why not stop the bars being related to the number of posts.  Why not have them signify the number of years as a member?  Just throwing that out there.  Not even sure why tracking number of posts is important anyway.  That's just me.

It's been my experience that those who care about such things are the ones most vested in having a high count.

I suspect that it's an option in the forum based on set limits and not easy to change. Let's give Aaron a break; he's going to be tired enough after whacking threads Monday morning.

Well you certainly seem to be running up yours in here, Tracy...

You know, if you don't like the question/suggestion, why don't you stay out of the thread and stop trolling in it.  I didn't see so much concern coming from you in the other thread regarding post count.  Oh yeah, that's right; you didn't care because I didn't inititiate it.  Your comments in here are simple reflection of your dislike for me.  Man up and admit so much.

This is a legitimate thread and obviously others have wondered about the bars as well...

Why do those bars even matter?  I mean, if someone has a lot of posts but most of their points are nonsense, who cares if they are in the top 10 percent? (And, no, I'm not referring to anyone in particular.)

What we really need is a "quality of posts" bar.  But that couldn't happen.

Actually, I laready proposed that but it probably would be difficult for a computer program to gauge that...

Who's gonna decide THAT little detail?

You?

Me?

The boss?

Some nugget with busted Snap-Tite parts?

Indeed, what if every post had to submitted, read, and judged for "quality content", then approved by the staff before it was available to the membership?

That what you're advocatin'?

There ARE forums out there with such requirements...  Dead ones...

While we're at it:

Let's nix the custom avatars, since not everyone is equal in time, talent, or even inclination to make one..

86 the GB Badges.. Not everyone is on the same level there, some have more than others.

Circular-file the custom siggys... No quotes, no nothin'...

Might as well, while we're all gettin' on an equal footin', get rid of the WIP and Finished build pics.. No need for that, since not every modeler is of equal ability or skill-level..

And last, make sure that there are only a set number of characters per post, so no one gets to say more than anyone else does..

Seems things are getting nasty. Aaron will most likely lock this thred. All this bull S786 about post counts seems rediculous. Manny and Hans, if you look at your post counts, how many of them have any real content? When you euphemistically refer to yourselves as having the most "contributions" and any question of your status being  classified as bullying. Way too much *%#+#  envy between you.

Manny and Hans, if you look at your post counts, how many of them have any real content?

Frankly, I'd say that, at the risk of blowin' my own horn, I've contributed thousands of posts with "real" content...  Not to mention countless hours looking up references for many of the members here and helping others with modeling tips, hints, and techniques...

I've also put up a bunch of my own builds, hosted and been part of several Group Buiilds, each of which have hundreds of posts...  I'm hosting not one, but two Group Builds even as we speak..

Sure, I've written hundreds of what some may call "pointless" posts, but that's part of the socializing that any forum you care to name...

If you think that I have 12,000 posts with one or two words in 'em, then you ain't been following me around these forums...

Here's another point y'all might consider... I'm retired... I got a job that I don't have to leave the house to perform, and I've got a sleep pattern that has me awake about 20 hours a day...  So I am free to post pretty much whenever I damn-well please.. I've got friends in this forum that I communicate with via this forum, Skippy..

You got a lot of damn gall to be thinkin' I just write in here for the sake of my own post-count, AT-6.. I never even paid attention to thoses numbers, and I defy you to find any more than maybe a few hundred "pointless" posts that I wrote...

That said, and by the same token, why don't YOU guys, with the low post-counts, and the membership dates older than mine, have any MORE posts than you do?  If you aren't making any "real" contributions to the forum, why are you still hangin' around?

I'll keep my own counsel on what kind of posts I make in here and how many of them there are, thankya ver' much...

Do you idiots (yeah, I said it) that're whinin' about high post counts and green bars think that anyone, ESPECIALLY me, will contribute LESS if there where no post counts or little green bars?

Sorry for the rant, but that REALLY burned my butt, AT-6... You got a lotta nerve callin' ME out about that crap, man...

Maybe y'all should reconsider your OWN "usefulness" around here...
