October 2005 FineScale ~ What do you think?
Posted by Matthew Usher on Thursday, September 8, 2005 2:55 PM
Fall is just around the corner, and the October 2005 issue of FSM is appearing in newsstands and mailboxes. Could you take a minute and let us know how we did?

As always, feel free to comment on the issue here -- we always appreciate feedback.

Thanks very much!

Since I got the first vote in, I move that we close the polls now and run more articles on what the poll says Big Smile [:D]

Actually, I also really liked the 1970s hobby shop one, so it was kind of a coin-flip for me.

Good to see detailing armor pieces, but I'm always a fan of cutaway aircraft. However, most of the articles just lack depth. They're informative at a glance, but provide very little detail and hint to someone wanting to try one of these projects themselves.

I have to agree with Zok above...quite a bit of "fluff" and not a whole lot of "meat".

I wasn't very impressed with the whole issue. There was't any thing that really jumped out to grab my attention. Compared to other issues, this one is DOA. Just my My 2 cents [2c]

I was really impressed when I bought some FSM issues from the late eighties for a buck a piece at the LHS. Maybe someone should look back on those issues and the old school articles, the fluffy stuff just didn't make into the mag. I dunno, if that staff was still around I'd probably renew my scrip.

I will echo a sentiment already posted and one I have made before:

Less, LOOK WHAT I CAN DO.

After reading all this, and going back to read the mag again, I believe there should be more helpful info in the magazine. After first reading, I thought it was good but after a 2nd, it just doesn't hold up.

Case in point, the USS Pennsylvania article. I thought it was great first time I breezed through it, but after reading much more closely, I was left with more questions than answers. Hopefully they will be addressed in part 2.

I noticed in the article on the F4U-4 there were references in the text to pictures that weren't there. I can understand that length constraints may require pictures being left out but maybe the text should have the references to those pictures left out as well? No biggee though.

I liked the artical on the cut away F-105 since I could show it to my wife and say, "see, I'm not crazy, this guy is crazy!"

Yeah, that kind of made me feel POed. Meh, Finescale was good when I was just learning that I knew nothing. I do not see a point in renewing my subscription this year.

I'm a recent subscriber and find the magazine to be a great inspiration.
I thought the 70's Hobby Shop was amazing and very nostalgic.

I voted for the Hobby Shop miniature. I thought this was absolutely extraordinary and had me not only staring at it for about an hour, but recollecting all the hobby shops I patronized during those years.

I dunno. My favorite was the cutaway. In response to many of you people- there was a how to cutaway thing several issues back. Howeevr, I agree that the magazine should move up to more advanced techniques and leave the beginner stuff behind. Furthermore, in-depth ariticles would also be cool. Like a REALLY detailed version of how to do the cutaways, rather than "which glue".

The camo thing was pretty OK. But frankly I don't see the point when I could just break out my hp-bcs (no offense matthew- that's just me. Blush [:I])

I got my new "Finescale Modeler" in the mail yesterday and read the whole magazine from cover to cover and thought I'd check out a few modeling sites to see what I'd like to buy...And I just now went inside the Magizine and was paging threw to the ad on page #25...next page after the "camo" paint job....It's the one. about the "Greatmodels Webstore" I typed it in and got a full "HARDCORE PORN SITE! with the easy to watch trailors just a click away...really easy to use, just click here it said and you get to see the whole thing! After 30 or so minutes.... i thought, I should I report this?!.... But please, wait a few minutes so I can bookmark this site first....LOL..Hey Ken?! This is some Modeling Magazine forum site... Thanks!..."RC"

The only article that grabbed me was on the kitbashed F4U-4, as I'm nuts about Navy aircraft. However, after I read and re-read it, it relaxed its grip. With as much as I hoped for in that piece, I felt like it had been edited with a chainsaw. Not one word about why the author chose Italeri's F4U-7 over their F4U-4B as the parts donor. Worse, there was nothing about the purpose for all the surgery. What discrepancies was he fixing? I have these kits in my stash, but it isn't worth a side-by-side-by-side comparison to find out! Still, it would be good to know, as I hope to attempt something similar someday.

Hoping for something better next time.

I echo Dick's comments on the 1/72 F4U article. It was pretty good, but it didn't explain why that particular kitbash fixed the accuracy errors the author was trying to fix.

The other thing that bugs me is not really the fault of the author, but the cockpit is still not very accurate. Corsairs didn't really have cockpit floors. Look at the cockpit images about halfway down this page to see what I mean:

http://www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/corsair.html

To really make the cockpit accurate, the floor should be cut away and some "plumbing" added underneath the rudder foot guides. I wonder if there's a resin detail set for the Corsair cockpit that would accomplish this kind of upgrade.

I liked the cutaway, of course. Smile [:)]

I really liked the Patton article. It had a series of simple tips that really made the model look good. I like the scale too!

Okay now the www.greatmodels.com is working an getting the right model link. I don't know how or why I got the porno site, but that is the www.greatmodels.com site I punched in with..Sorry for the landslide of inquiries to that site...I did want to bring it to Finescale model magazine of that being a porno site because of our younger modelers..."RC"

The cutaway F-105D was incredibly well done, however, I got the most out of the airbrushing techniques...more realistic goals for me at this point I guess. All in all, I enjoyed the whole issue as always.

Cheers!

pegleg, if you leave of the "s" at the end of greatmodels... I did it once accidentally.

I liked the method one of the authors used to detail the tracks on the little tank, that was a helpful technique.

I think that in order to get a better idea of which articles readers enjoyed, that a different voting system should be used. I would like to see people vote for their 3 most favorite articles from the copy and rate them on a first, second, third basis. I believe it would help show how close things are together. For example, the article on the Israeli Hawk missile launcher would be a close second to the F-105 article in my own opinion.

I'm not a model Airplane builder, but will definitely vote the F-105 D # 1 of the 3 top best in the magazine this month.
Followed by a really close " Show Case" My last but not least is really close only by the toss of a coin # 3 is "Preppen a Patton" even though I'm not a small scale Tank modeler..
I only build 1:35th scale Armor and wish all the Armor models were 1:24th scale....With all that wonderful detail the Armored models have, if they were all in 1:24th scale they would be perfect, as all that detail would be shown off so much better..
Maybe it's just these old eye's arn't as good as they once were ....It's getting harder to see the miniature pieces, holding those miniature pieces with these old fingers is another thing... LOL..."RC" Cowboy [C):-)]

By way of comparison, your sister magazine Model Railroader generally has more detailed articles on the various kitbashes, superdetailing, and scratch-building projects. They also have nice "prototype" articles that give you information that would allow you to do your own modeling. I'm going to make an attempt to write an article that I think would provide this level of information, although I'm not sure my modeling skills are up to the level displayed in the magazine in general. Perhaps somebody who really can model would like to hook up with me for a joint effort, since I think I can write fairly well.

As I become more advanced in my techniques I find little info in the articles of FSM. Please keep some How To articles to attract more modeling enthusiasts. Those How To articles are what have attracted my young son and his friends to take up the hobby.
