The most amazing thing was I really was specifically looking for a 1/16 Lambo Countach LP500S....nearly the first kit I saw. Had to be fate. Then the HK DO 335 Trainer was another.

Was watching You Tube video s of the nats and found there was A BUNCH of stuff I missed. Was interested in tools and AM, however my fat backside wore out to fast. Oh well thats why I'm excited about Omaha.....now where the heck did I hide the treadmillHuh?

You have no idea how hard it was to NOT buy everythingWhisper, I could have easily gone bankrupt, I think I may have a problemConfused

Armornut,

No, you don't have any problem at all!  Big Smile  A first-timer MUST go nuts in the vendor's room.  It just has to happen.  That's the rule.

My first Nats in 2004 (Phoenix) saw me run out of Mad Money.  I saw stuff on the tables I wanted, but had to stop, because I was going to visit a friend in Oregon right after the contest.  And my suitcase was already full!

When we took some friends to Japan for the first time, one of them filled a suitcase that could hold a human body with stuff.  Needless to say EVERY single customs inspector made him open his bags!  I think that suitcase tipped the scales at 70 LBS!  The nice JAL counter lady cheerfully told us that they would not charge him an over-weight fee, because they took the entire party's luggage weight and divided by the number of people.  Oh, and helpful hint:  Getting an oversize suitcase for travel in Japan is a BAD idea, as they can be too wide to fit between the turnstyles at the train stations.  Ask my friend Lance, he knows.  Stick out tongue

Thanks Learmech, I'm sure the walk from the room to show will be less that .5 miles. I walked over 16000 steps packing up yesterday and that included over 10 hours of driving, ariving home and going to bed. Tongue Tied

Modelcrazy (Steve), Armornut (Perry), Joe, and Mongoose (Chris), getting to meet you FSM "Good Guys" really made the event for me!  I had a great time thanks to all of you.  I hope to see you all again at a future Nationals (or anything else).  And to the guys who could not make it this year, put it on your calendar and help grow the "FSM Mob"!

And congratulations Steve on placing with your Akagi!

Great time guys,. You made a fun experience a joy. Chris didn't need to buy anything since he won it all at the raffle!

Joe beat me to the Mogami but when I saw he had it in hand I had to see him take it home.

Armornut, it was so great to meet you! I'm glad you were able to find the kit of your dreams. Sorry it costs so much to send it but there was no way you would get that thing on the plane.

G, man your a Hoot! Finishing up your build all Thursday night and Friday, then winning 2nd Yes Man I'm so happy for you Big Smile

My Akagi won third which considering the competition....I'm happy Big Smile My 20 year old Mayflower also got 3rd.

There were over 6000 entries this year but since there were ywo years to get ready for this one and considering Covid....I'm surprised there weren't more. I bought more than I thought I would but am happy with all of them. I'll post them to the acquisitions thread after we get home.

I hope to see you guys next year and hopefully others from the forum.

So cool hanging with everyone, can't forget the wonderful Mrs, Modelcrazy, she really is an amazing lady. Joe, Chris, Steve, and Lord Dark Helmet, could not ask for a better experience.

The UPS station will be open from 11am to 1pm 21Aug21. It cost me just under 100.00 to ship my stuff to Washington. They do not take cash so have your credit/ debit card functioning. Also my dimentions were 24x18x10 inches, not sure if weight was a factor.

Thank you again for making my birthday experience so special, would not have been the same without yaGeeked

It has been an absolute thrill meeting the likes of Model Crazy, Armornut, Real G and Mongoose. You are all a tremendous lot. Look forward to tying in with you all tomorrow.

All I can say about  it all is sensory overload. It really has been an incredible experience. It hasn't even been diminished by the fact that Chris won my Kitty Hawk kit.Big Smile

So far I have bought a lot of kits & goodies, won a raffle, and just hit a $1,000.00 jackpot on the slots. Vendor room here I come.

Good luck to my compacted entries tomorrow. Bring home the bling!!

This has been a blast so far. Lots of walking through. I walked 6 miles yesterday just getting stuff from my car to the model room or our hotel room.

It's been great meeting everyone. I'm supper tired after standing and walking and carrying stuff for about 8 hours.

The judging is happening now till probably past midnight. Awards ceremony tomorrow. I got a few things some big but mostly small items like AM and books.

Tomorrow will be another day but won't be in a hurry to get down there.

I'll take pictures tomorrow and we'll leave on Sunday. My wife and I are pretty committed for next year.

I saw a video on you tube this morning of someone walking through the vendors' area at the 2021 Nationals.  As you would expect, the room was packed with kits, supplies, and books.  I was disappointed to see lots of people, surprisingly vendors, without their masks on.  I hope that everyone has a great time and I pray that this doesn't turn into one of those "Super Spreader" events.  Stay safe everyone!

As for the t shirt at Andy's, you need to wear it or buy it on Friday to get your free kit.

BTW, no joy on the honu flip-flops.  It was way more elusive than I thought.

I may have to either put the builds on the tables or my room and register on Friday morning. Huh?

A friend is bringing his laptop to the show, so it will be possible to post photos while there.  That way we can keep the fellas (and gals) on the forum up to date on the latest shenanigans.

Too bad the overseas manufacturers will not be attending this year.  I always enjoy the Zoukei Mura and Special Hobby booths.  I wonder if Revell will be showing any hardware from their upcoming 1/48 SR-71.  Yes ladies and gentlemen, if you have not heard, Revell Germany will be releasing a new tool kit this fall.

I didn't see "Risky Business" either!

I don't believe Risky Bussiness is on the required viewing list
I need to check my resources but I think you're safe there.

Never careed for Seger either except for "Turn the Page". I think Metalica does a better job of it anyway.

Yeah, viewing the original Star Wars in 77 on the big screen for the first time...........

I didn't see "Risky Business" either!  Big Smile  After seeing Tom Cruise slide into view in his underwear so many times in the trailer on TV, I decided that was more than enough.  Although I do know one quote from the move:  "So...who's the U-boat captain?"  And yes, the Bob Seger song.  Not a fan - my fav Silver Bullet Band song is "I feel like a number".  I did watch "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Porky's".  Surprise

I DID see Star Wars in the theater back in the summer of 1977.  It changed my movie life forever.

On an unrelated note, I stayed up all night working on my model.  Indifferent I need to get it ready for the paint shop.

Actually, I should not be using that line, as I never watched "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".

Neal, I believe that's required watching. That and the original Star Wars trilogy.

Well Perry, thanks for the heads up Big Smile I'll have to do something about that.

Art, I hope your doing better up there and it was wonderful (not the circumstances) to see you here in my neck of the woods. It was the least I could do to bring you some essential items for you stay in our lovely city.

Steve - As Batman from Batman Begins said "I'll look into it."

Perry - Mac nuts covered with chocolate, toffee and powdered sugar?

I almost forgot to mention the ultimate Hawaii souvenier - pineapple motiff pot holders!  Any takers?  Stick out tongue

So who else is definitely going?  Beuller?  Bueller...

Actually, I should not be using that line, as I never watched "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".

Something doused with heavy coconut fragrance?

I can come up with a few ideas, but the wife wonudn't approve Wink

Although, she is lamenting a pair of flip flops she got on Kawai (I know you're on Oahu) that blew out a couple of years back. They were black with turtles on them. Just in case you happen to see a pair when you're out and about, she wears an 8 1/2 to 9. Please do not go out of your way.

Aaagh, just a little over a week till D-Day.  Tongue Tied  Time for that final push!

So Modelcrazy, Armornut, Joe Rix, and me (the Minion) are confirmed to going.  Anyone else?

BTW, anyone want something from Hawaii?  Shaky Hula Doll?  Hawaii girlie calendar?  Something doused with heavy coconut fragrance?  There is a perfume called "Wicked Wahine" - and it's as bad as the name suggests!

Oh, and the Hawaiian Word of the Day IS Wahine.  Noun.  A woman.  "Wa-hee-ne",  not "wah-heen" guys!  Big Smile

I'm still fully committed to attending. I'll be driving over on Weds morning. It's a 7 hr drive so, not too bad. Given that I still wear my mask at work everyday that's a non-issue. Happy to do it actually. I'm more than happy to share pics/contact # in order to meet.

Does anyone want to share contact #s so we can find each other at the convention?  Or should we devise some cryptic sign/countersign like in those spy movies?

Good question. I just figured we look like our avatars, you know, I'm a Bald Eagle with a flag stuck to me, you're a minion and Armonut is a cat. Easy Big Smile

We could PM recent pictures of each other or numbers or both I guess. I know there's more coming that aren't saying at the moment. In fact, several guys from the SPAM site are coming as well as a few form my home club. I don't think I'd recognize them anymore since I haven't been attending since 2019.

I have to go, spent to much money planning for it over the last 2yrs. That said I probably won't be available at the convention as my plans have been hijacked by my brother....be stuck at the rifle range all day Friday. Not happy, I'm to nice of a guy.

10min UPDATE!!! I have been warned that IF i do not attend the convention I will be flogged within an inch of my life by a very close friend....one I know will do it...don't ask how I know LOL. SO I will figure a compromise basically let my brother do his thing while I fist bump, elbow rub, or whatever with the amazing folks I have met here. His loss not mine....I'm well armed ar homeZip it!

The clock is now approaching T-minus 2 weeks.  Indifferent  The weather is moving in, but launch is still confirmed at this time.  So who is pressing the "commit" button?  Will we still be able to meet, or will we be hiding in our hotel rooms?

I had heard that room service by the hotel will not be available, so one of those delivery apps will be needed.  I don't use them, and prefer to grab take out personally.  I hope some of the restaurants will be open.  But being Vegas, there "should" be a ton of other eateries around town.

Fresh from the IPMS website, Nevada has re-instated the manditory mask mandate. They HAVE NOT limited social distance OR capacity as of 30July2021. The event is planning to go forth and be a historical Nationals.

Will we need hazamat suits?  I'll pack my yellow Devo jumpsuit and Power Dome hat!  Are we not men?  No, we are Mod-O.  Stick out tongue

Ha-ha, actually I never bought any Devo merchandise.  Too bad, I did like that ensemble.  A classmate did the full get-up in high school one Halloween.  Oh wow, that was so long ago.  Are we not men?  No, we are Old-O.  Tongue Tied

But seriously, things are getting kind of nuts.  Me and the Hawaii gang are still going, barring any last minute changes in travel or venue status.  What is the status of everyone else?  Still "Go" for launch?  If so, see you guys there.

In a step beyond the mask recommendation of the Clark County commission, the State of Nevada following the CDC's lead, re-imposed mask requirements for both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons in public settings.

Plan accordingly

Ed, OK, I reserved for Omaha. My wife loved the idea of staying at Mt Rushmore on the way before that.

The only place I could find the dates is the IPMS forum. I'm thinking it was you who asked the original question and got the answer of July 20 to 23. We booked on that info but can change if needed.

EdGrune
2022 is in Omaha, NE.   2023 is in San Marcos/Austin, TX.

I'm in Boise, close enough to Oregon. Omaha is 1200 miles form me, a 15 hour drive. While reachable and a possability it's probably not something we will do next year. My wife does want to see Mt Rushmore is at least in the general direction.

San Marcos however is 1800 miles and a 24 hour drive. Not something I would be intrested in driving anymore. I did live there in the DFW area if you remember me but I moved back home in 2019.

I could fly but driving is less expensive....for now.

This is probably my only chance to go to the nationals before it goes back to the east where I'll have little to no chance then.

2022 is in Omaha, NE.   2023 is in San Marcos/Austin, TX.  Neither are what I would call 'back east', unless you live in California/Oregon/Washington State.  Both are served by major airlines

I watched the public hearings of the Clark County Commissioners on the subject of the Southern Nevada Health Districts recommendation of masks for all (I don't have a life). The council supports the  health district. My takeaways were;
1.  they are deathly afraid of another total shutdown & what it would do to the economy
2.  they are aware that vaccination is the only efficient way out, but until the hesitancy problem is resolved masking is a good approach
3.  the gaming board sets the rules in the large venues, they can mandate whatever they want WRT masks for all
4.  the Resort Association and Chamber of Commerce supports masking for all
5.  the decision to mask employees instead of all is a first step.  If numbers do not improve masks for all. is a possibility
6.  the large venues will provide their plans for masking to the county by 8 am Monday
7.  the ordnance sunsets the day before the convention starts, and may be revised, expanded, or extended on or before that date

Plan Accordingly

Just checked the IPMS website for info on the Nats. According to them, posted 07/21/21, everything is still a go. Nevada has not mandated any restrictions, or closures. IPMS encourages those who wish to wear masks to do so. The statement also stated , posted 07/22/21 that pre registration closes on the 31st, any refunds will not be processed until Sept 2021. Anybody who is on the fence about attending may register on site.

Yeah if it is between losing the cost of an airline ticket versus hospitalization/dying, I don't think there is much to debate about.  If anyone cancels for any reason, there is no shame at all.  Over here we had 243 new cases reported today, which is about 5X the daily average.

As noted, this will all be moot if Vegas or the Nats gets shut down.  I wonder how the Tokyo Olympics will fare, despite not having any spectators?  The annual fall All Japan Hobby Show got cancelled, even though the Shizuoka Show went through without public accesss.

Still, I'll be hammering away at my Nationals build.

I will suck it up for the plane/ airport stuff I don't like it but it is a sacrifice I figured I would have to make. As for the venue....if you want to wear a mask go for it, I get it , it is after all YOUR choice. I just at this point in time, do not trust ANYTHING coming from gov't and will gladly take my chances. VA gave me a shot record so. Hope they don't shut it down. I would rather loose my money by my choice than stuff beyond my reasonable control.Bang Head   Please let me say to the "friends" here that I really want to meet in person at the Nats. I do care!! I care about everybody, please forgive me for sounding like I don't. I have my own opinion and am VERY open to requests from people to make face to face meetings comfortable for all parties involved. Meeting whoever I can will be the most pleasant ecperience I could ask for and I want it.....I just have underlying difficulties with the double talk. So that said I formally ask that if possible may I be honored to make whoever wants to meet me in person in Vegas. RESPECT and understanding given. Thanks guys.

For me, it's not the mask mandate.  It's the unvaxed, unmasked yahoos running around that worry me.  I was planning on limiting my exposure anyway, basically doing just the contest and a few select outside venues.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me either. As a double lung transplant, masks aren't a stranger to me. I've worn them on planes since my transplant anyway. I would prefer not to wear them while meeting everybody but when we go out to eat we can see all our ugly mugs then anyway. My concern is that they'll cancel it again. This is probably my only chance to go to the nationals before it goes back to the east where I'll have little to no chance then.

I hoping they are too commited but if Vegas shuts it down it won't matter.

KJV I would like to think I would have the patience to "comply" when asked hopefully politely however as volitial as I can get on short notice it might be bedt that I avoid the situation altogether. Not calling it yet, we'll see how it shakes out as we get closer.

Definitely avoid it outdoors. (And as a tip, don't put it on indoors until asked. They won't throw you out; they should ask, at which point you can comply. Then, later on, you can let it down below your nose.) Combined with the heat, its kind of asking for misery.

I am a little concerened with the uptick in the national COVID infection rate, and the return of some mask requirements in Vegas.  Still, my plane ticket is not refundable and my hotel is already booked.  So barring a full-on Zombie Apocalypse, I am committed to going.

Found out at least a couple of our club are going.  One will be judging one of the categories.  They've been doing weekly Zoom meetings and build nights every week, waiting until the Vet's Home opens back up and we can get back to our normal interaction.  Going to have a parking lot swap meet in a couple weeks with a people's choice show.

My buddies and I got together this past Saturday for our monthly Hobby Night, and we thought it would be fun to take a group photo with our entries.  In consideration of the forum membership (as well as small, easily frightened children) I normally I don't post photos of myself.  So if you are a person of weak constitution, please look away now.  Surprise

That's my ugly mug in the center, flanked by Dean "The Machine" on the left and Lance "WH40K" on the right.  Dean is our resident car modeler, and Lance is our gaming miniature painter par excellence.  Please ignore the un-ironed aloha shirts in the background; I promise to get to them later.  I promise.  Embarrassed

So anyway, you now have had a look at the ex-Hawaii Mafia gang that is headed to Vegas.  I'll post an update when we have our next meeting in August.

I jokingly told my friends that we need to wield the mighty Asgardian Model M*jo Hammer Myu-Myu to get our projects done.  "By the Power of Grayskull..." oh wait, that's the Sword of Getting Off Our Duffs.  Stick out tongue

I can't make it this year, Covid concerns and other family matters.  My family and I did make it to the nationals when they were held in Tennessee and that was my first time.  Everyone who is a modeler owes it to themselves to go at least once.  The high quality of models, the vendors, and the chance to talk to people who love the same hobby that you do.  As far as local contests are concerned, I have a lot of opinions but this isn't the forum for that.

at least i can build. and, as compensation, there is an international Rugby 7s tournament in town the same weekend.

i attended Omaha in '12 and helped run the raffle at '13 in Colorado.

I'll be arriving in Sin City on Wednesday morning.  Me and my friends usually need to unpack and prep our kits (and I usually have to give my models a soap water sponge bath to remove the accumulated dust), so the models hit the contest room on Friday morning.

I have noticed the contest rooms are invariably dusty, so the less time out on the tables mean less cleaning.

Maybe we do lunch or early dinner on Friday?  I would like to volunteer for judging, assuming they ask, COVID concerns and all that.

I will be flying in on Aug 19 around noon from Spokane Wa.  May have a kit I just finished to put on the table just to say "I did it"  leaving on Aug 21 around 7pm. The only off site thing my brother and I are planning is Battleground Las Vegas. An indoor, or outdoor depending on how deep your pockets are, shooting range. I for one need some recoil therapy.

Well G, I'm finally finished with the Akagi but need to have a nameplate made (I'll never feel like I'm completly finished with it) so depending on things outside my control, like the world exploding, It'll be there.
I keep having daymares about the grandkids knocking it over and destroying it, in which case I can make the Akagi wreck I guess.

The meet and greet,   I haven't really given it much thought. I kind figured we'd (the ones who actually found each other) would decide at the time. I'll be there with my wife and we're not planning on "doing the town" but the hotel hosting IPMS would be fine with us. I reserved a room in the hotel since last year when it was anounced.

We will be ariving late Thursday, driving for 10+ hours from Boise. It'll be too late to check my builds in so I'll check them in on Friday morning. I'm thinking of showing the Akagi as a vignette since it portrays a specific time in history.

So yeah, I'll see you, or you'll see the Akagi there.

Teenage Modeler

Can't go. I mean, it is obvious, lol, that I am a 14 year old who has no moneyBig Smile

No worries TM - just add it to your "to-do" list when you get to college or start working.  That's what I did.  Big Smile  And never say never - I had dreamt of going to the UK Nationals at Telford since the mid 1970s, and it became a reality when a well travelled friend said "Hey, you wanna go?"

I partially blame Modelcrazy (Steve) for deciding to throw in my "forever model", as his Akagi provided the inspiration (aka kick in the pants).

Oh and what about the meet and greet?  What's the plan?  My friends are planning on going to a "nice" restaurant on Saturday since the banquet is not happening.  I jokingly suggested we stay at the restaurant enjoying desserts and drinks until the contest room doors are flung open for the customary "model stampede".

So I'm going because MC committed to getting the Akagi done! I think tho I have a model to bring now. Going to build a carry-on case for the AH-1Z Viper. IF I win anything at all I will give props to MC Balloons and no matter what I'll be able to say I was there to see the Akagi launched...Big Smile

Akagi
Oliver Hazard Perry
Corel mayflower
Bandai AT-ST
Sunken Zero
Maybe a 1/48 Swordfish.

Tick-tock-tick-tock-tick-tock.  No, not the latest silly app for your phone, I'm referring to the impending National Convention in August.  The start of the 100 day countdown has come and gone, so we are in the final stretch.

So... What is everyone bringing to the contest?  I know some people guard this information like it's top secret, but for the others, what's up?  I mentioned on another thread that I will be trying to finish the Miyazaki monster airplane I have been tinkering with for more than half my lifetime (for 33 years if you can believe it).

It's my oldest unfinished model, started when my dad was still alive and VHS was the media of choice.  I'm a lot older now and feeling like Hugh Jackman's character in "Logan".  Time to get it done,

And if there is extra time (ha ha!) maybe I'll do another weird model.  Not another spaghetti kit, but perhaps something off the wall, like a Fujimi crayfish:

This is my talented friend Lance's model.  That's just... cray-cray.  Stick out tongue

Armornut,

Vendors don't always have access to power and wireless at conventions, and those additional services can sometimes be expensive.

On a related note, when I went to Japan with some friends, one of them carried traveler's checks in lieu of cash.  It was a huge PITA to even find places that would cash those checks.  And yes, I used the rapidly thinning wad of 10,000 Yen bills to gauge when to stop buying stuff.  One time I spent all my money and only had enough to make it back to the airport.  I gave up window shopping and just took a nap in the hotel lobby while waiting for my friends to get back from their last minute binge.  Fortunately, I buy less and less stuff now so I no longer have that problem.  Smile

Now the only problem I have is finishing kits...  Embarrassed

Ca$h is king Armornut.  Everybody accepts it, and you can watch it dwindle in your wallet to know when to stop.

I would not count on vendors with credit card machines.

DUMB QUESTION????  What type of currency does the vendors usually take, cash, obviously daaSmile, debit cards?? OR will some vendors accept personal checks.

My next question on checks is since Vegas is an "International"city will the cashier at the resort cash a personal check. I have personally only used cash or debit cards in the casino...never been there for anything else.

If some of you Nat vets or brave "travelled" souls could assist a couple of NAT Noobs it sure will make our experience more enjoyable.

Rooms will be booked in a couple weeks solid, rental car has been detailed to my bro. Looking forward to hopefully meeting some if not all of you folks in August.

"Mission Control, how are those models coming along?"

"Mission Control, do you copy, over."

"Ummm, Houston we may have a problem."

I really look forward to seeing Steve's Akagi!  And those Zeros with painted canopy frames are kinda shaming me into doing the same with the KX-03.

I have been twice: 2004 in Phoenix and 2007 Orange County.  What a great spectical it is.  Definelty reccomend going if you can.  I don't compete anymore but I sure would like to go browse the tables and vendors and see some of you all.

Thanks,

I feel very fortunate.  I was able to attend when it was in KC. (I live here), and in 2017 in Omaha. Next year ( if all goes well) , I will be able to go to Omaha again.  The following year I will be retiring, so the trip to San Marcos is on tap. All predicated on whether I’m still kicking, of course.

Modelcrazy,  If I could work it out, the trip to Vegas would be worth it just to see your ship in person.  I’m already jealous of those who can.

This is my first and probably only chance to get to the Nats. After my lung transplant and almost occupying a plot at the veterans cemetery up the hill a few years back I'm not going to regret anytghing if I can help it. If I have a chance to go somewhere, I'll go. Becides, after all the work I'm putting into the Akagi it world be a shame not to show it off and just put it on the shelf.

You're right, the rest is dry. I've driven it a couple times myself. Assuming you are coming from LA, there is a neat 50's style retro diner called Peggy Sue's right off route 15, if you enjoy that sort of thing. I'm guessing yes, and according to Google, as a plus it is authentic, being reported as opening in 1954.

We stopped in on our last drive from Las Vegas to the O.C.

If you make it to Fremont, check if the Mob Museum at the end of the street is reopened. It's in the old post office and federal building. Fascinating tour, and they have a speakeasy in the basement with an operating bootleg moonshine production on-site. Smoothest moonshine I've ever had.

At this time I have every intention of going. Vegas is a 7 hr drive from me and I dang sure want to attend my first Nats. I was not able to attend the one's in Denver which wholly bummed me out.

I've spent a good amount of time in Vegas as we used to have season tickets to the NASCAR race there. One of the bonuses is the awesome buffets. Another fun thing to consider doing while there is take an evening on Fremont street. This is the old part of Vegas and is closed to traffic. There are all sorts of things to do and see and the hourly light show on the giant overhead awning is choice.

I am immensely excited to get the chance to meet some of you there.

I would like to go but am still sitting on the fence. My worries are the same as what others posted: Will it be canceled, will the attractions I want to see be closed (Shelby Museum, kayak trips, Hoover Dam tours, etc.). I'm heartened to see that all the vendor tables are sold out. I'll probably have to make a decision soon in order to take advantage of low air fares. I suppose making reservations will be a gamble...so appropriate for the venue!

It would be good to see you O. I'm hoping the vaccine will help reopen things. Here in the Boise area, things are opening up quite a bit (we really didn't shut down completly). I still went to work even though I'm not an "essential worker"

Like I said, this is the closest the Nats have been since I've been aware of them. If they don't have it this year maybe they'll do what the're doing next year. Going back and holding it in San Marcos since it was cancled.

Um...maybe. I live in LA, so Vegas isn't too far for me. There are only a couple of things keeping me on the fence. One is the pandemic. My wife was in Las Vegas this past week, and she said it wasn't fun. With all the closures and restrictions, the options for activities were very limited. Of course I'd be much more tempted to go if things were open again. The other thing is that the Thurs and Fri of Nats are my first days of school. I could probably take those first two days off. Nothing really happens those first few days anyways. Again, I'll have to see how the school year gets rolling with the pandemic and all.

Short answer? I'm leaning towards going...

I don't know if I'll show the Akagi as a display or vignette since it will be in a seascape and show a scene just prior to the first wave at Pearl.

Two of us modelers from So CA are planning to go. We attended Chattanooga in 2019 and it was fantastic. My buddy won a two awards in AFV and I brought three car models "for display only" (a nice option that I hope they do again in LV). Here's a photo I shot of the model contest hall in Chattanooga to give you some idea of the size of this contest:

There were several more larger conference rooms with vendor displays and it took more than a day to see everything. This year we're driving so we hope to bring more/ larger models to show and compete. I suspect this first post-Covid meet will be huge in terms of attendance, models entered and vendor booths. I read all the vendor spaces are already sold out.

Vegas is a crazy place, if/ when the rah-rah gets on your nerves, three interesting attractions worth checking out are 1) the Mob Museum in downtown (history of organized crime, well done) and 2) National Atomic Testing Museum off the strip and 3) Shelby Museum (never been but looks interesting).  IPMS is not sponsoring any organized excursions this year due to Covid group size restriction.

I believe IPMS is skipping the rubber chicken banquet and doing a cocktail party /awards presentation, maybe some of us can huddle there if we don't meet before? Looking forward and hoping to meet a few of the nice modelers Ive heard from on this board. John

Maybe some of the Texans will show. I'm coming from Idaho (10 hour drive) and another may be coming from Ohio.

Me too.  Will I have something to bring?  I darned better.  If the Nats happens, I have a feeling it's going to be huge.

A dinner sounds great!  I'd be in for that as well.

Although I have never been to Vegas, I will be traveling with Vegas veterans, so I can just relax and nap in the back seat of the rental car.

Hopefully the pandemic will be under control by then and we will all have had our shots.
