Hammer!!

Maybe the title of this thread could also read "Do you have a hobby that supports having a wife" - I've heard stories... ;)

On the bench: Airfix 1/72 Wildcat; Airfix 1/72 Vampire T11; Airfix 1/72 Fouga Magister

Mine gave in on the "No models in the living room" thing... She let me have the wall above the TV and half the wall behind the couch.. Ther ARE shelves on the other walls, but the cats have taken them over..

Yes. When I started working at home we cleard out a room in the basement for my office. It has a cool little nook and she said, 'this would be a good place for your workbench'. I'd wanted to start building again but didn't have a place to do it. Now I have a really cool office AND a place to build.

Like many, we have a 'no models in the living area' rule, which is fine. It's my hobby for my enjoyment so models stay in my office.

In military terms, six refers to either the commanding officer in a particular group,

Well, there ya go, I'm not in the "loop" since I've never been a militree man.  But, I am glad to learn that!  Thanks for the insider info!

Gary

But Hans, you still sort of remind me of ol' Uncle Jody.Stick out tongue

And that's not a bad thing...Big Smile

Lol..  GM got it for ya, good.... Yupper, "Six" is shorthand for her call-sign, which is  "Household Six"...  Well, Jody's got the right name then too.. BTW,  "Jody Calls" are a miltary thing.. Marching cadences are called "Jody Calls", and "Jody" is the dirtbag- 4-F- non-hacker back on the block that takes your woman, moves in your house, spends the money you send hime, and and drives your car while you're gone... Example follows:

"Ain't no use in goin' home, Jody's got your girl and gone.

Ain't no use in lookin' back, Jody's got your Cadillac.

Ain't no use in feelin' blue, Jody's got your money too.

Ain't no use in lookin' down, Ain't no discharge on the ground.

When I get a three-day pass, I'm gonna kick ol' Jody's azz!"

What is this magnificent thing in San Antonio you're talking about? I am going to have to look it up. I could probably convince my wife it's time to go back!

Hey professordeath. It's going on next year on Feb 16. Here is the website if you want to check it out

While she doesn't have any real interest in it, my wife supports it. She comes down into my fort every so often, and will say 'Cool' or whatever, but that's about as far as it goes.

As far as the spending goes, we haven't had any problems there. I'm not a hoarder. Right now my backlog is the biggest it's ever been, with one on the bench and three in line. I don't have any room for 50-60 boxes. Even of I did, there's no way I'd ever have that many. It'd be overwhelming.

I have a philosophy when it comes to my stash. Work on one, and when I'm around halfway done, put the next one on the far corner of my bench. It's incentive to not get lazy.

My wife supports it.  She doesn't go crazy buying her stuff and I don't go crazy buying modeling stuff.  She can tell how much I am enjoying it, so lets me go with it.  As others have mentioned, there are times she knows it is better having me in there that having me in her way!  She can watch her chick-TV, and mercifully I can leave and go into the "hobby lobby" (as my granddaughter calls it).

Example of awesome wife support!!! My wife got a pretty nice bonus from her work this week. It was a major surprise for her since its not in the norm. I just got an email order confirmation for two kits I had on my Christmas list: the Academy F-22 and Hobby Boss F-14A. She sent me a note saying she knew I wanted them and to not worry it doesn't count as Christmas. Amazing!

Again. That is way cool. I think I have my wife talked into going to the Alamo Squadron deal in San Antonio on 16 Feb 13. Shes actually kind of fired up about it. It's supposed to be a decent size event.

Just a bit more info.  Due to our IPMS chapter having it's meeting place change its' hours of operation, we are moving the meetings to my house.  My wife is okay with that.  Imagine, once a month 8-12 model guys come hang out for a few hours.  Well, at least she knows most of them pretty well.  And knowing her, she will probably listen in on things, and probably make some observations on her own.

So I give her double kuddos for allowing this.

And she also helps with judging at the StarFest convention model show.  She has for probably 10 years now.

My wife is very supportive of my hobby. I use acrylics to keep the fumes down so that's not an issue. She looks at it from the angle of that I could be doing worse stuff if I didn't have the hobby (and she's right), like building muscle cars (that soak a LOT of money and get nothing in return when you sell them) and other stuff. If she had a gripe it would be that I don't build the models and give them to a museum. She's always on me about that but she doesn't push the issue too hard. Can't see putting the detail I like putting into a model and giving it away. I guess if I built just a regular warbird, blacked out the glass and didn't put a whole lot of time into it then I would give it to a museum. But yeah she is really into what I do, calls me crazy with a smile and lets me do what I do.

Jimmy, I look at it like doing miniature reno's - cedar roof shingles, crown mouldings, baseboard trim, staircases w/ railings, newel posts & spindles, and running electrical for the lighting - but without the need for power tools Wink . (Yeah, I know, where's the fun in that? Stick out tongue ).

My GF supports me, but she's not supportive about the stash, lol.
But she buys me a kit when it's my birthday or some other holiday,
which is good because, cuz of that, I know that I will get something I like
(but she allways want me to do a PINK plane)
She'll be Building her own 190 for the 'FW 190 Butcher bird 2013 GB'.

She's fond of F4U Corsairs, probable because it is the only one that she can recognize (she can't tell a Spitfire from a Mustang)
She loves F4U's so much that she ordered me to build a small cabinet with all different kinds of them to put in the living room (12 is the number we agreed on)...
By the time that I'm done with those I'll probable be so sick of them that I don't wanna make one for my own collection...

Anyway, she comes to air shows and IPMS meetings and such but I think it is more because she wants to be with me instead of beeing there...

With regards, Ninetalis.

Back to the bench

This thread begs another question, if our wives or girlfriends have a hobby do we support them?

Oh absolutely, and she has many hobbies. I helped her construct a real nice workroom where she can have at 'em, whether it be her beading, miniature oil paintings, genealogy research, or her fondness for doll houses. Many times, we'll actually work on them together.

casually mentioned the new BISMARCK was out and mebntioned the price and she asked if i was going to get it. i'm not but that was nice of her. she sees my 3 shelf stash of stuff i probably won't build since it's in the garage and knows about the 5 shelf stash in the workshop but doesn't mind as long as i am building. i do paint with acrylics and spray enamels and finished in the garage or on the patio.

if she finds anything odd on the floor she asks me if it's a model part before throwing it out.

Why yes, she does, and yes I support her hobby, reading and counted cross stitch,  although, facebook seems to be taking more of her time, mainly the games.

Yes I am fortunate in that respect. We went to Seattle for our 30th anniversary and spent a good part of the trip at the Boeing museum and at the Boeing plant. I have always felt that my hobby is just that and that it should not negatively impact our monthly budget or spill over into the "common areas" of the house. So I make sure my stash is stored in places that do not adversely affect her and try to make sure I keep the spending in check. She is most often the one to say "look you have earned a hobby, don't feel guilty about buying" whatever it is. When I am off taking pictures at the museums of details that only model nerds care about, she is off reading about the personal stories connected to all of the memorabillia which interests her more than the airplanes. This thread begs another question, if our wives or girlfriends have a hobby do we support them?

All these stories of how a wife supports your hobby are not only amusing, but also probably what makes each and every one of you comfortable modelers. To those of you who are rouge "Weep not" your day will be redeemed.

She's not bad......She often visits the workbench to look things over, ask questions, point out whats good and whats not, and listens to me talk about them.  She also often looks in on all of your builds when she passes by and I'm on the forum.  She sometimes even surprises me with a new kit to add to my stash.  A great example of this, last week she ordered me this without me knowing and it arrived in mail today.

We move a lot and one of the first things she looks or ask for when looking for a new place is a suitable room for me to display all of my builds.

Na...she doesn't support the hobby

naw, Jimmy, some of us think that we don't have quite enough models, yet

haha, it sort of depends on your outlook,,,,you might see it as "omg, 7 Academy Crusaders, that is too many",,,,,,while I see it as ,,,,,"oh, cool, I have 7, I only need 5 more"

My fiancee supports it as long as I keep the paint smells to a minimum.  Plans for the next house already include a workshop/garage workspace.  And the one time she said I had a lot of models in the closet (probably less than 20 though) all I had to do was show a few pics of some of the more extensive stashes from around here and I got an "oh, never mind, that's actually not a lot ". Plus my monthly IPMS meeting gets me out of the house, and out of her hair

Mine supports up the point of where I have a section in the basement to build.  She may ask how the build is going or if I finish, but she doesn't seem to know what I exactly like or don't like to build.

Current build: 1/48 Monogram A-1H & AMT Jedi Starfighter.

Completed:  1/48 Monogram/Revell P-61B, 1/32 Hasegawa F6F-5, 1/48 Hasegawa F-16C, 1/48 Revell Mig-21PFM, 1/48 Revell/Monogram AH-64A, Revell/Monogram 1/48 F-14D, AMT 1/420 USS Defiant, AMT 1/650(?) Both me and my partner are airforce brats. so we both enjoy being around aircraft. She attempted to build a T-6 Texan once, not very successfully. But she tried. She doesnt mind me doing it. It was her idea to designate bedroom number 3 as my office for my models.

My wife hasn't ever made any negative comments about my hobby but on the other hand she hasn't ever made any positive comments about my hobby.
