Very true! I use Pale Moon and DuckDuckGo on all my personal electronic stuff and only Chrome and Google on the work computer.

The dating site I think might just be random since it only came up a handful of times. I'm getting a BMW and a MasterCard ad on this site now which I'm guessing is more non-targeted stuff.

It's the shoe ads that just really confuse me, I haven't been to to any online shoe stores and I'd been getting a lot of them! It doesn't really bother me or anything, I just find it hilarious that Google has decided I need a new pair of shoes!!!

I still don't see those ads, here in Finescale.  I'm running Win10 and using Firefox 58.0.2, and Chrome v63.0.3239.132.  I do see some ads on other forums.  They're presented via Google Ads, and when I feel inclined, I'll click to hide them.  Usually I ignore them.  Those ads presented via Google Ads are selected by their algorithms, showing ads based on your surfing habits.  A good reason to minimize or eliminate your interaction with Google, if you can.  I use DuckDuckGo as my search engine, for example.

LOL, I've seen those ads too though not here! Lately I've been getting a bunch of ads for shoes- which I don't understand since I've never bought shoes online or even looked at them!

The rest are stuff that does make sense, ads for HobbyLink Japan which I do visit their site often and cell phones after I looked around for a new one.

Well there is a solution to stopping obstructive ads. If using chrome, download Adblock from the chrome web store. It blocks spam/scam ads with fake content redirecting you to random places around the web. Though some ads will stay, i.e. the fsm forum ads advertising their subscriber only content and whatnot. If you don’t use chrome, you can download it or try to see if you can download Adblock from their website (I think they have a site). Anyways, hope this can maybe help.

Adblock chrome webstore:

Hi,

It's funny that right after reading this thread one of these ads came up on the next thread that I opened, as shown in the screen capture below.  I wasn't logged into FSM at the time and was just surfing as a guest, but I don't know if that makes any difference.

I guess that I spoke too soon. I just got a Facebook pop up add... one of those annoying wheel spin types... and I don’t even have a Facebook... lovely...

I suppose that is one advantage of mobile over desktop... even though the site’s compatibility with Apple IOS is less than optimal.

We get what we pay for I guess...

I think when all the ads are on its slowing the site way down I've had trouble even getting it to come up earlier I tried to post a build I just gave up the site was moving slowly.

It probably depends on the browser your using or who you chose as your provider like AOL or others.

My 2 cents

Pawel

...By the way, I've just read an article in the newspaper saying that google ads together with facebook, twitter and the likes are the threat not only to american way of life, but also to democracy and our civilization as a whole. I say thre's something to it... Their only goal is money and greed can be dangerous - but that's already off topic...

Read "World Without Mind:  The Existential Threat of Big Tech" by Franklin Foer.  It's not money that the CEOs of Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook are after, though they do want to be profitable.  Rather, they pursue a collectivist goal through their technology, because they believe that will usher in a Utopia.  Yes, it is definitely anti-liberty.

They are "ON" the fsm website.

On the right hand side of the screen, just below where it say's "Subscriber only content"

It's always the top add and it cycle's through every few seconds.

I swear, it's not me!

Thanks for clarifying, Timmy, that's an important detail.

I don't usually visit the main FSM webpage, to access the forum.  I have the forum URL bookmarked.

Anyway, I just went there now, and I don't see any ads at all.

As others have mentioned, there are other variables involved here, which will impact what each individual user sees.

I'm using an HP Beats laptop. One of the World of Warships ads has changed to an ADT home security monitoring ad.

Rob Gronovius

The only ads I see are for Kalmbach modeling publications and a bunch for World of Warships, an online game.

I think that what ads you see depend upon what you use to visit here. On my phone there are minimal ads. But on my tablet or laptop there are many more.

And yes, although I’m no tech type, I’m pretty sure that ones browsing history is influences the sorts of pop up ads that show up on screen. Not to mention the information that cookies fish out of your device. I get plenty of Spanish language stuff likely from my name even though I really don’t hablar espanol, at least not with any real proficiency.... and I do not visit any Spanish language websites.
