This is a fun thread, nice to get a glimpse into the secret lives of modeling friends. Smile

And I tip my hat to you, Hunter, not only for starting this fun thread, but also for taking the time to reply to posts as you can. This is just excellent form and provokes actual conversation. We could, IMO, use more of that around here. You sir are my hero today. Bow Down

It seems we all seem to share some common hobbies, don't we?

Me, it'd be golf, travelling and travel photography, photo-printing, HO railroading (sort of, I like to buy stuff), PC tinkering, and studying my second language, Chinese. Oh, and tinkering in basement, accomplishing absolutely nothing. I'm really good at that.

Like Bill said, hobbies change. Ex-hobbies that come to mind; RC (powered and gliders), shooting, and my main lifetime hobby, flying. Gave it up after 3 airplanes and a few thousand hours probably over 10 yrs ago.

I hope you keep posting folks, this is fun stuff to read.

BTW, "Cow pasture pool". That's funny. Playing that idiotic game for over 50 yrs and first time I've heard that one, Murph.

Hello TB,

I had to look up "LEGO A.F.O.L." and I was shocked and amazed by what I saw. Holy smokes the depth and size of some of those builds. And I was impressed by the photos submitted of the storage and workbench areas. You talk about a lot of money in that hobby. My niece loves LEGO's so my wife and I always get her some on her birthday and xmas...I can't believe how much they cost now. She likes the Star Wars sets, workable construction kits, and those like that. We got her a excavator set of decent size and it cost $75.00.

We saw a excavator that was $625.00...it had a remote control. LEGO's sure have come along way.

Well;

Where should I start ? How about Wood - Carving ? Especially Hummingbirds ( Lifesize ).

Reading , well I finish a book every three days . Right now - S.M. Stirling " The Sea People " .Just finished a Bernard Cornwell .

Models ? of Course . Ships of all types and media. Cars , and other stuff ( Figures and Gundam ) Oh and of Course Model Rail-Roads and LEGOS .

I belong to a local LEGO A.F.O.L. group and am on the Board of the local Rail Museum . Would do more , But the politics though mild , in the Museum are enough for me .

Still shoot . when I have the chance .1911 still my preferred handgun of choice . Now I do shoot My Desert Eagle , but not much and The rifle .Well It's custom made from back in the good days so I don't shoot it much .

I used to pick on an innocent little white ball till I hurt my shoulder . Fishing , Love it but don't have much of a chance . Music .Well the neighbors don't like me practicing .

Sorry , it's a Coronet . And I don't get to do the Trumpet that much either . They don't complain about my Sax though . . They are old and relaxing .

Write some ( Unpublished yet ) , Doing a book on my modeling life ( Son Insists on it ) and otherwise just enjoying being here after the heart thing . T.B.

P.S. added 1-10-18 . Someone mentioned Riverboats ! I have built two for clients , One the State of Arkansas Legislative Library  and one for the Little Rock Convention Center when they opened , and had the Edgewater Grille . She was the  "Edgewater Princess ".

These were done just before the 1982 disaster befell me . As a matter of fact the Edgewater Princess was delivered One day before all the world fell apart for me .

Tis good though . I and family recovered . You know life is like that .That's why I always try to learn something new .

Murph,

Man oh man...I would get a lot of tickets in that beauty. I had to look up cow pasture pool. I have to say what I saw was funny and would be fun to play. I am shocked that it is not played here in Montana. It may be, but I have never heard anyone mention it.

Hunter, I’m with you! I live in Colorado and we’re an outdoor family. My kids all shoot, some of us shoot a little friendly competition like steel challenge. I also help coach my daughters 4H shooting team. Also fish, hunt, and like to travel.

mawright,

I love the great outdoors. You and I are lucky to live in such vast and beautiful states. I'm not saying that are states are the best...but for the outdoorsie type of individual Montana and Colorado are perfect.

Watching and obsessing over Manchester City Football Club.  But that goes without sayihng.

I LOVE to read.  Always have.  I read mostly non-fiction, but will also read historical fiction (love me some Bernard Cornwell) and some fiction (Nelson DeMille and Stephen King are my favorites).  Currently reading "The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War" by David Halberstam.

I have to agree with you ManCity, Bernard Cornwell is probably my favorite historical fiction author. The Saxon Tales are a great series!

I was a local tournament bass fisherman for over 20 years. A job change made me give that up. Part of me missed the competition but not the politics. I also woodwork and love fixing things around the house and my vehicles. Was a gearhead when I was younger, would love another muscle car but they are so expensive. Will be moving to Florida this year so will be adding boating and beach to my list.

Like you Hunter, I enjoy long range shooting several weapons I have purchased thru the years. Most or all are at least for me unaffordable at today's going rates. I found a great outdoor range about 45 minutes drive from the house where I can shoot my Mauser 8mm rifles, Garand and M1 Carbines.

Then there is an idoor range close to the house where I can shoot my handguns. I hate the tiny military sights on the 1911 Colt.

I also love flying rc planes and have several including two 1/4 scale biggies. It's unfortunate to have a lack of public flying sites here in Central Florida while a crowded S Florida had a couple of public fields. I don't know if they are still around but out here it's all private clubs with some hefty dues.

I also love classic cars. I owned a 1955 Chevy 210 2d hardtop for over 15 years and loved working on it. Till this day I regret selling her and wish I held on to it.

Looks like a nice variety of interests in here. Me? I love hot rodding but can't do it all the time due to how expensive it is. I did , however , just plop a nice fat 400hp 383 small block Chevy into my truck. It felt good to do something performance related again after about an 8 year absence from it.

I used to be heavily into RC planes and scratch building, then I realized they used up copious amounts of money and space. I also use to own a plane and flew quite a bit, then I got married to my current wife and bought a house, that ended that. While in the Coast Guard I pistol shot for competition, and when I got out I crewed for a hot air balloon company in northern CA.

Not interesting right now!?!? My friend that is very interesting, and awesome. How many people can say they owned and flew their own plane, and flew hot air balloon's? Not me, Jill wouldn't allow that LOL, she can barely handle my job let alone putting me in the pilot's seat LOL. "What's this knob do"? Whistling LOL. You have, and will live a very interesting life.

I have a group of friends I board game with once a week.  Have been doing that for about 20 years.  We do strategy board gaming, and the rule generally is that if there isn't fighting or monetary domination, we aren't interested.  There is a hearty amount of bluster, and a fair amount of swearing.

Hey D,

Great tradition. That sounds like a great time, and a good group of friends. My wife and I always have a Scrabble or chess game going between us. Needless to say there is a worn out dictionary next to the Scrabble board Big Smile.

Well, young fella, they change over time.

Sold my clubs, sold my guns, sold my bikes, sold my skis, never owned a boat or any rods.

I like to cook. I eat out a lot, and I like to analyze, I like talking to chefs, and I have an entire wall of cookbooks.

That is great to know about you Bill. You live in a city where I would dine out a lot too. My wife loves to cook different dishes all the time. Between cookbooks, and shows like Top Chef I never get bored with dinner LOL. I hope you are well and improving every day.

Now it's pretty much scale modeling and waiting. Soon I hope to pick a few things up again like maybe camping on occasion.

I'm not very interesting right now.

Lots of active folks here.  Me...not so much.  I have a group of friends I board game with once a week.  Have been doing that for about 20 years.  We do strategy board gaming, and the rule generally is that if there isn't fighting or monetary domination, we aren't interested.  There is a hearty amount of bluster, and a fair amount of swearing.

The Mrs. also forces me to be sociable on occasion, which is a good thing.  We have some very nice friends we don't get to see often enough.  I do enjoy spending time with my wife.  We are hoping to travel a bit when we retire in a few years.  We both discovered how much better a meal can be with the right glass of wine, and have put a little effort into learning about wine and food pairings.

I used to spend too much time computer gaming, but model building has largely replaced that.  Now I spend too much time thinking about model building, and not enough time actually doing it (this happens a lot at work....shhh...don't tell anyone).

Enough.  I do tend to ramble.

Dwayne or Dman or just D.  All comments are welcome on my builds.

Scale anything.  I was into RC cars way back - 1/10th scale Associated RC-10.  Got pretty decent at the local track.  Then on to RC Planes, then Helicopters (scary world), and I have a small RC sailboat for the pool.  Still have the planes but since my boys went off to college I don't fly them much. Mostly sticking to slow flying foamies and the choppers.

On to 1:1 - got into High Performance Driving Events with my Boss 302LS.  Been about a year or two since I've been on track but used to do 8 or 9 weekends a year.

Video with telemetry on Chuckwalla Valley Raceway

Also like the drag strip in my 09 Charger.  Current setup is a bit of a beast on the street and no longer 'smog'able, but @760RWHP on Q16 race gas with a procharger F1A @ 14lbs of boost its a lot of fun.  Previous setup was a magnacharger @ 8lbs of boost and ran around 11.5 in the quarter (about 480RWHP).

At Barona 1/8th mile with my daughter riding shotgun.  I redlighted and got smoked by a monster chevelle (that was in my old build).

Also do a little trout fishing, skiing, water sports  - though sold my boat after the kids went to college (theme here...).  Occasional shooting - love my M1A

Thanks,

John

Great topic.  I enjoy watching Texas Rangers baseball and classic cars shows.  I also enjoy a good book!

MM,

Are you able to attend many car shows throughout the year?

Not as many as I’d like!  I tend to frequent the local clubs but the national shows always elude me.

Lets see, I used to do 10-15 motorcycle track days a year. I was getting ready to get my CCS race license when I crashed and ended all that fun. I still enjoy motorcycles, but, I haven't been riding in five years. My wife and I also enjoy target shooting a few times a month. I'm thinking this year I may attempt to do my own reloading as well. During the warmer months I do like to hit the links. But, most of all, I enjoy spending time with my wife, kids and our grandson. Now to get a couple of them hooked on making models! lol

Hmmm....where do I start?!  I suppose it depends on the season around here.  Winter time is stuck in the house, so other than modeling I do cross stitch on occasion.  Summer time is a plethoria of things.  I have my Dad's 69 Z/28 so I work on that.  I rebuilt the engine in it 10 yrs ago when I got the car.  I've restored my current motorcycle, I swear it spent more time on the center stand than the kick stand when I bought it.  We have a yearly camping trip in July, and I also hunt with the hubby.  So trips to the range to shoot guns for fun is a pretty frequent thing.  Photographing airplanes whenever I get the chance is one of my favorite things to do as well.

It is a blast.  We have a 40mm Bofors mount atop turrent 3 that “fires” using propane and is able to traverse and trane. We also have 3 20mm mounts that work the same way as well. Mock air attacks are staged on the Saturday afternoons of drill using replica fighters from the Mobile airport. I am assigned to a damage repair division as a firefighter. We have also piped aboard veterans of any battleship if we know they are visiting that particular day.  This is such an honor to be able to do for visiting vets.

Well, lets see. Started drag racing the year I got out of HS. Did it for a few years until I discovered how hard it was to drive the race car to work every day but couldn't afford a   second car with 2 kids to feed. Switched to R/C car racing and R/C Sailboat racing. Threw in a few R/C planes along the way but had a bad habit of making very hard landings. Added hunting and target shooting for relaxation. All the while these hobbies were going on, I built plastic models too. Started in 1946 and still do it today along with a few of the others.

Used to whack a ball when I worked at another shop, but haven't touched a club in 10 years.  Still do some wheeling in the Cherokee, been a member of PNW4WDA since '76.

More into gold prospecting/mining, belong to 3 clubs, and am part owner in 3 claims. Also got into metal detecting with two mid/upper type machines, and belong to a local club.

GH,

I have always wanted to try gold prospecting. One for the adventure, and I would enjoy the outdoors and scenery. Great interest to be involved with.
