My wife and kids and mother in law are all moving to Florida sometime this year.  I have put a transfer request at work and am waiting for the approval.  My wife will find a job when we get down there.  Mother in law's house is on market and mine will be soon.  In the meantime we have started packing the non-essentials.  And I decided to pack the builds and stash but left a few boxes untaped to be able to get to the stash if I get the shakes.  So here is the area now.....

Just moved my 24 yr old daughter from Louisville, Kentucky to Miami, Florida this past week. The company my brother works for offered her a job at twice the salary she made in L'ville. Stress level was high for her. My brother-in-law loaned me his brand new extra large Ford Transit cargo van and we got all her stuff inside it. She followed in her car with a friend that will fly back home on Sunday. Fortunately, she has a nice apartment down the street from her work and walks by my brother's apartment building on her way there.

Hard to believe she had that much stuff. Her friend from school was a big help in the move; that young lady kept things going when my daughter got moody from stress. My wife was rather useless as a co-pilot. Avoid any route that takes you south through Atlanta. I was lucky heading north and hit no traffic going through the city. Southbound traffic in that city was horrible on the way down Wednesday and was still backed up when we returned on Saturday night around 8-9 PM.

Well my transfer request has been approved. I don't have a date set in stone yet but I have already been assigned a route in Naples. Preliminary reports say I might have to be in Naples by the end of September. My house has not sold yet. So I may have to head south alone. My friend in Naples said I can live with him and his family for up to one month. I don't want to be a burden. If this is the case then I will rent a large truck, load as much non-essential stuff and put it in storage when I get to Florida. When my family is able to follow I will have to fly back up and make the trip south again with our pets. Hopefully we will have a house by then.

It's official. All reassignment paperwork is done. I'm still going alone. My house has an offer but the buyer has a house to sell. My family is staying until closing. We've ordered two PODS. I'm driving my wife's Trans Am down to Florida. I'm booking a ticket on the Amtrak Auto Train. Which runs from D.C. to Orlando. For about $400 I'm saving 900 miles of wear and tear, gas, and hotel. So my trip will consist of 6 hour drive to D.C., 17 hours on train, 4.5 hour drive to Naples. I'm packing all my built kits and whatever else I can squeeze in. Maybe some clothes whateverBig Smile

Oh My !

I will tell you this T.J. I don't envy what you are facing . If I wasn't alone I would move back to the Ft. Myers area . I built a lot of it ( Cape Coral ) when I lived there . While the crews were doing the houses and lots I would get in my Northwest 95 Canadian built dragline with it's five yard bucket and dig canals all day .

If you didn't find me in the office in Little Rock , that's where I would be . Liked the place a lot . I had an old steamer Trunk and a folding table .That way I could get my Glue and Plastic fix ! Wherever that Ford pickup went , so did the Trunk and model stuff .

Good Luck and may you have a fair following wind ! T.B.

Oh boy, been there done that and it's no fun but needs to be done. We have done 2 out of state moves so we are pros at it but will avoid doing it again as much as possible. At least the train ride will give you time to relax and stretch out. I dread the driving part when we go to see our son up to SC it's about an 8 hour drive which gets to be very boring after a couple of hours behind the wheel. We try garbbing cheap Alligeant flights when possible just to avoid the long drive. Sad

So I'm leaving on Friday morning. Looking forward to the next step in my life and career. But my family is staying behind for a bit so I'm going to miss them.  So I also packed the Firebird. I don't think I can get any more in this thingWhistling

I was able to get all my built kits and 20-25 from the stash. Also all my fishing rods and some tackle. Clothes and other necessities. Packed to the brim

Well I've been here about 6 weeks. Still no family here with me. But it looks like some light at the end of the tunnel. We finally have an offer on my house. And we are putting an offer on a house in Ft Myers

Update......Ft Myers house was a no go. But put an offer in on a house in Naples. Accepted. I'm flying back up on January 3rd to finish up in CT and then driving down for good with the family. Hopefully closing up north will be 24-48 hours before FL so while driving down everything will finish up and I can pull right into my new home. It is a gated community so that's going to take some getting used to. We have a spare bedroom which will become the hobby room. But I'll have to share with my mother-in-law with her scrapbooking. Crossing my fingers that everything goes as planned I'm only going to have to work til I'm 80 to pay this off

Hopefully things will work out and you get your house ASAP. Naples is very nice indeed, you will love it there.

Ok this is the last update for this thread I think. Flew up to CT on the 3rd. Closed on the house in CT on the 8th. We signed earlier so we left on the 8th. 3am started driving. Made it to Dillon SC about 4pm. Got a few hours sleep in a motel. Left again at 1am. Made it to Naples at 12:30pm. Dropped my son and my MIL at a friends house. Signed everything to purchase my new house. Was able to get the keys and start unpacking about 4pm. PODS arrived Thursday am. One is done the other will be empty today. I'm beat. Will be starting a new thread when I start to build my new hobby room. Can't wait

Geez TJ I’m pooped just reading about your trek. I too remember those hectic days when we sold our home and moved out of state, twice. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, you are almost there.

Welcome home.

I like Naples, spent lots of time in Bonita Springs up 41. I hope you enjoy it down there as much as I always did.

Moved my family back home from England in 2005, a very stressful time but worth it. The children have grown up next to family, we're all happy and opportunities we hadn't anticipated came a knocking. Hope the same for you.

Good luck and safe journey.
