Hey thanks guys. Just got done with the packing and 0 Hour is getting close. Looks like we will have nice cool temps in the 50-60s range so it will be welcomed to get away from the Florida early heat and the FREAKING love bugs!!

A very sobering part of any visit to Normandy and the landing beaches are the military cemeteries. The German one is particularly saddening when you realise how many are there.

AND HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, MMS M33, HMS Alliance, WW2 Small Craft off Portsmouth, an HDML HMS Medusa near HMS Alliance.

Man that sounds like a super vacation PJ. Enjoy the historical tour, and don’t forget to sample the local food & drink. You’ve got a great old lady to have arranged such a holiday.

Side note: Pt Du Hoc was scaled and captured by D, E, & F Companies of 2nd Ranger Battalion. A, B, & C companies of 2nd Rangers, along with 5th Ranger Battalion, landed on Omaha beach in the Dog White and Dog Green sectors. Theirs is one tale among many from that day and event.

 

 I read somewhere over 200 Rangers went against Pointe Du Hoc and at the end of the fight only 90 were left. What bunch of brave young men! I will be honored and humbled at placing my small US flag at the American Cemetery.

Hey stik you can bet we will be sampling lots of food and drink! My wife booked a tour of the Jamison facility in Dublin, with whiskey tasting included.  

Black sheep - you will really enjoy Reading when you go. We've been going every year for 12 years now. Our group runs the Home Front area which includes the theater, 40's house, O-club, Radio Station, USO Canteen (new this year) and small period shopping area. They're expecting over 100 re-enacting groups this year, B-17, B-24, B-29, several B-25s, several Mustangs, P-63, Tora Val and Kate, a real Zero, Wildcat, Corsair, Helldiver, Dauntless, Avenger, C-46, C-47s, C-45 and the usual plethora of trainers and liaison types. The planes are in the air virtually all day, and the heavy equipment (tanks, half tracks) moves around all day as well. The period entertainers are live all day and the evening swing dance is a hopping place.

Saturday is usually the best day to go, but it really takes two days to see it all.

Belfast never sawe action against the Bismarck. SHe was being repaird at the time

In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and, in spite of fears that she would be scrapped, spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment, and armour.

In December 1943 Belfast played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. She also took part providing support during the D-Day landings and also in Korea.

James, thanks for the info as I was going from memory from being there 34 years ago. I do recall a piece of a ship debris on display that must be the Scharnhorst’s.

I would love to extend my stay but unable to do so.

I can relate, sir.  We leave tomorrow for a two week Canadian themed battlefield tour; Amsterdam, The Scheldt Estuary, Nijmegen, Arras, Vimy Ridge, Beaumont-Hamel, Ypres, Paaschendaele, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Caen, Dunkirk, Dieppe, Juno Beach at Normandy and a couple of other places.  Although we've done a few of these locations previously, this is a guided tour with a retired army historian as the tour guide.  Although this wasn't high on The Boss's list of things to do, she knew how much it would mean to me so it was a great Christmas present.  I will get to see where my great uncle fought at Vimy Ridge and gassed at the Third Battle of Ypres (Paaschendaele).  We are very luck men to have such generous spouses.  Enjoy your trip and the memories it provides.

Wow and Wow! Your are going to not just one but many places that would be on most of our bucket lists. I hope you bring some of us less fortunate ones some photos and discussions from your trip. Most of all have fun, but be safe....
