Again, not that modern.

Ill drop another hint.

The country of origin produced a very similar aircraft that was used at the same time in another theatre of operation. It was mildly succesful. Another aircraft, also very similar used for the exact same role at the exact same time (same day) was also produced by its ally.

Another hint and a recap.

Ordered in small quantities (100 to be exact)

Only 2 were built.

They were never used for their intended purpose.

An unusual design for its type (Think wings)

Its counterparts in the other TO were basic by comparison.

The intended customer scrapped the idea of using the entire type mid way through the conflict.

The aircraft can be filed under 2 different categories which most people would not consider putting together.

Im sure PhilB has got the answer already.

Another hint for today.

It was closely tied to a very famous aircraft of that theatre.

and a quote from back to the future.

"Roads? where were going, we dont need any roads!" (this is also a clue)

And remember the first question. Only 2 were built. They were prototypes.

So amazingly close. Smaller. And remember both the country of origin and their allies in a different TO had an equivalent.

The Bristol XLRQ amphibious glider?

YES!!!!!!!!!

Low wing monoplane floatplane with retractable undercarriage. It used the wing roots for stability on the water. It was deemed not tactically feasable in the pacific as a landing aircraft because of the heavy defenses on the islands.

Over to you mil.

The whole "less engines" than a single had me scratching my head for a while...

This aircraft was quite specific in it's role & was proposed with two quite different cockpit arrangements. It had something in common with both a renowned, but retired gunfighter & an agile aircraft named after a bird of prey.

Only 2 were built.

Another clue;

The aircraft manufacturer shares a name with a fictional archaeologist.

The retired gunfighter & the agile aircraft each have something unusual with their wings - the aircraft in question has both of the unusual features in it's wings.

The retired gunfighter was retired about 2 years after the agile aircraft first flew.

No, the Jones S-125 is considerably more powerful than the one in question, & the one in question carries considerably more fuel?

No takers, more clues;

The retired gunfighter was the last gunfighter.

The agile aircraft's name is the same as that of a bird of prey, a Golden Eagle, a home-built aircraft, a spacesuit, a book, a missile & some other things.

Both of these aircraft featured unusual wings & as far as I'm aware the only aircraft to have both these unusual features is the one in question?

OK, no takers & it's been over a week, so it's over to whoever wants a go.

The aircraft in question was the Cornelius XFG-1 fuel glider, Cornelius was the archaeologist in "Planet of the Apes" & the XFG-1 had a variable incidence, forward swept wing. The variable incidence wing was used by the F-8 Crusader ("The last gunfighter") & the forward swept wing was used by the Su-47 Berkut (bird of prey).

Congrats Milairjunkie, you have beaten the combined brains of the aviation trivia world!  I've got a real stinker for my next question but as I'll be out of internet coverage from Wednesday (yes it could take at least that long!) for a couple of days, I won't volunteer for now.

I never would have gotten that one.

Ill post one, see if you can guess it.

This "bird" was based on a "legend".

The Legend was named after a myth.

It achieved a number of firsts for its country of origin.

It was initially designed to test features on a much larger aircraft, which never ended up adopting the features in question.
