No, this aircraft is a jet, and has fought in two of the more well documented major air wars of the cold war era although one was nothing to do with cold war rivalries, as well as several minor conflicts, clashes. This aircraft was not produced by Russia, China, or the United States.

I thought it was a long shot. I know Iran and Isreal had Phantoms and thought maybe they  squared off.

My only other thought is the Typhoon or Tempest.

No, not the Phantom. This aircraft was not a big visual change from its' predecessor, and was a step in a different direction in its predecessor than the Phantom was over its'. I dont know of the Phantom being used by two opposing air forces in air to air in any war, like the aircraft in question.

Could it be the F4 Phantom?

This aircraft was not built in the Eastern/Communist Bloc.

No, youre going too far back. This aircraft is a fast mover. It was used in opposing air arms as a result of sales to both countries, not because it was captured from another.

I guess some Soviet aircraft also used by the Finns - Polikarpov I-153 or Lavochkin Lagg-3?

Next clue- when this aircraft flew against itself by opposing air arms in combat, there was air to air combat and kills.

Not the Mirage F.1. either... a tad older.

You are right Grant about your feeling... I am sure this is a giveaway clue, but it has flown against itself in opposing air arms in combat.

Not the Skyhawk. But the first aircraft it was modified/descended from is of roughly the same vintage. just a few years newer.

Exactlly even though I know the answer, and I'm sure alot of us do.

I think the predecessor to the Skyhawk would have been the Skyraider, designed by the same person Ed Heineman.

again im gonna say the skyhawk. I know it flew anti shipping in the fawklands war and its flown in ground attack roles in other wars. dont know the predecessor though. am i right?

OK, so here we go: this aircraft was deveoped at the request of an export client nation after their great success with it's predecessor, which it was developed from. It would go on to perform admirably in the hands of several nations all across the globe. It would see major combat in two wars roughly a decade apart in two different roles.

Supermarine Spitfire, which needed a stronger wing for faster flight, enter

Supermarine Spiteful, which supermarine proposed could be a jet

Supermarine Attacker, was OK in RN service but not happy in general as a tail sitter so lets give it tricycle and swept wings...

Supermarine Swift, had major teething problems so RAF went towards the Hunter but the FR.5 still served well as a PR aircraft.

The lines of each of these aircraft is clearly present in the preceeding aircraft

How about Supermarine Swift FR.5? Developed from the  Type 510 and Supermarine Attacker.

OK, so that narrows it down to a UK design. Not the Hawker Hunter because it was still going very strong in the 1960s and was not retired until the 80s.  But it was a record setter.
