I don't mind the Whiz, but i can't stand fried onions. Since that's a staple of Philly cheesesteaks, i think i'm missing out. But that's the best part... options!

Anyway, what are the best LHS in the area (especially around the Blue Route, since i travel from Conshy back to S. Jersey all the time), in everyone's opinion? i've frequented a few shops in Jersey, and i'd like to check out some in PA. Thanks!

Hi, I'm from Moorestown, N.J. which is just over the Betsy Ross bridge from Philly. In regard to the Cheesesteak debate; there is no set rule about which cheese is standard, as a matter of fact I see most people order American cheese. I go to Jim's Steaks on South Street if I am over there late and don't feel like driving over to Pats or Geno's. If you are in the Northeast then you may want to check out DELVAL Scale Modellers. We meet the 1st Friday of the month in the Artisan's Hall on Roosevelt Blvd., [somewhat across from Nazareth Hospital] on the South bound side. The meetings are held upstairs and are well attended with a wide range of skill levels and modeling genres. The meetings start at 7 pm

Personally, I perfer homemade cheese steaks to ones bought from resturants, getting more custom then you ever could there.

Im suprised there are so many of us, I know the baron is from around here to, I JUST missed him at last year's toy soldier show. 

Next time theres anything of modeling interest around here we should all go.

I'm not sure when Cheez Whiz became popular in cheesesteaks, when I was growing up there in the 60s and 70s it wasn't even a consideration.

   Another thing I thought was pretty disgusting was the Cheesesteak Hoagie! Lettuce and mayo on a Cheesesteak!?!?!?! Whoever thought that one up oughta' be drawn and quartered! SoapBox [soapbox]

Its meat, cheese, (if your so inclined, I dislike them) fried onions, mushrooms and peppers (same as onions)

Check out Penn Valley Hobby up in Lansdale (probably easiest to go up the Northeast Extension rather than 309). I first started going there in the early 70s, and when I retired from the USN in 1995 I lived about a block and a half away (very dangerous for the wallet!). It's a true Mom 'n Pop store an well worth the visit IMHO:

Herb's Hobbies up in Doylestown was pretty good (in the mid-late 90s anyway). Most of the time the prices were just a tad below retail, and the clearance section was well worth a visit.

For me, Pat's and Geno's are for when you're closing the bar and want something to eat.  The best places I always found for cheesesteaks were the ones on the corner close to the house.  As far as what to order, since I'm a big guy, I go for the Double [cheese (doesn't matter what kind)] Wit.  Double meat, cheese of some variety which sometimes is Whiz, and Fried onions.  Cheesesteak hoagies are good too!  As are pizza steaks.  To each his own, I guess.

Some of the other good places are Jim's on South Street.  Another is Chink's Steaks up on Torresdale Ave.  Steve's Prince of Steaks is another good one especially since they opened one up here in the suburbs.  

As for someone saying there was a cook-off with Bobby Flay, that was Tony Luke Jr.  While he also makes a good cheesesteak, the staple at Tony Luke's is definitely the Roast Pork sandwiches.  Roast Pork Italian with broccoli rabe.  Delicious!

Another Philadelphia staple is the hoagie.  Hands down my personal opinion is that Primo's makes the best hoagies.  I heard a guy complain that there was too much meat on one and not enough vegetables.  This guy was bigger than me!  I couldn't believe it.  He's also from the middle of nowhere New York so his opinion on hoagies is null and void.

We also have the soft pretzel issue.  While the Philly Soft Pretzel stores make a good pretzel, the best place was the pretzel factory down on Frankford Ave at Dauphin Street.  They were a dime a piece when I would buy them (I'm only 26).  That's also where you got them to sell them on the corner.

Who knew that I could post something this long just talking about food?!  I'm hungry now. See ya.

pretzel factory, hands down for  soft pretzles.  I love them!  Get them when there warm, put some cheese on them, warmem up so the cheese melts then put garlic salt on the cheese while its melted, oh god thats good
