Probably because when I was a kid, it was the first craft-related activity that I could do. What kid doesn't like building and creating objects where they could stand back and say "I made this!"?
I think over the years, my reasons have changed. When I was a kid, I did it because it was fun and cool in the eyes of you and you friends. When I was in my teens and older, it got me into history. Now, in this day when my life is so busy and I feel like I'm being pulled in 20 different directions, I can do something that allows me to be in charge of my own quality and end product. Getting a new model kit represents time that I can and must set aside for myself and in the end, I can still say "I made this!"

I have a few reasons.
1. I love the sense of accomplishment when you complete a kit and realize wht you have made from what was a bunch of plastic bits.
2. It's really the only thing I enjoy that I can do anymore.
3. It keeps me sane since I almost never get out nowadays.
Synister I am just curious as to why you guys build models? I build them because I am good with my hands and it keeps me busy, out of trouble, and actually saves me money.

Because it satisfies my need to feel creative and t produce an expression of myself in plastic. I'm a creative person in general.

Building- (All 1/48) F-14A Tomcat, F-16C Blk 30, He 129
Yeah, I have a stock response for that question but considering the various ages and sensibilities here...
That's the subject for a another thread that might get us banned for life.
"I'd "I'd rather be historically accurate than politically correct."
"Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc!"
Why do I build models?
Because the subject matter and history is so interesting. The evolution of design, be it armor or aircraft, within a given time period is fascinating. For example, just to see what everyone started WWII with and what they had at the end of it all. The world went from props to jets within a really short amount of time.
Hercmech But...but ..that would only leave one hand free to model, or even less depending on who is holding your hand.

Because I can't have real aircraft or helicopters.
I've always had a passion for aircraft, mainly military ones. Now I get to build scale replicas of them and learn more and more history.
Now back to the stupid Tomcat!
So I have an excuse for someone to hold my hand.
It started out with me thinking it would be neat to own a miniature version of something I thought was cool, this at the age of seven. I found that putting it together exercised my brain cells and my hands, and I liked that too. I still build for the same reasons, only now the knowledge gained from research plays an equal part in my enjoyment.
I don't. I'm stil trying to figure out the instructions to my Dragon kit...
