I have a few reasons.

1.  I love the sense of accomplishment when you complete a kit and realize wht you have made from what was a bunch of plastic bits.

2.  It's really the only thing I enjoy that I can do anymore.

3.  It keeps me sane since I almost never get out nowadays.

I am just curious as to why you guys build models? I build them because I am good with my hands and it keeps me busy, out of trouble, and actually saves me money.

In the Hangar: 1/48 Hobby Boss F/A-18D RAAF Hornet,

On the Tarmac:  F4U-1D RNZAF Corsair 1/48 Scale.

Probably because when I was a kid, it was the first craft-related activity that I could do.  What kid doesn't like building and creating objects where they could stand back and say "I made this!"?

I think over the years, my reasons have changed.  When I was a kid, I did it because it was fun and cool in the eyes of you and you friends.  When I was in my teens and older, it got me into history.  Now, in this day when my life is so busy and I feel like I'm being pulled in 20 different directions, I can do something that allows me to be in charge of my own quality and end product.  Getting a new model kit represents time that I can and must set aside for myself and in the end, I can still say "I made this!"
