It doesn't take too long to amass a stash. 

MIne is down to about 30, with a Semovente on my bench. I'm trying to be really picky anymore. When I first got back into the hobby deep, I bought a lot of outdated Tamiya and italeri kits. As new releases popped up, I sold them all off, as I didn't want to go backwards per say.

These posts come up time to time.

I can only try and remember what's in my stash.  Two years ago I had to forfeit my shop to create a nursery.  This stash is boxed in a storage unit waiting for our new house.  In the meantime I've accrued about 50 or so more that are shelved in our garage (boy does my wife love me). I can't wait to break into all those boxes in the storage unit.  I'm sure I've forgotten about many and will be pleasantly surprised.  The first one I plan on doing is my Tamiya 1/32 Zero.  Or my Monogram B-29.  Or my Trumpeter 1/32 F-14D.  Or my 1/48 Revell F-15E.  It's gonna be like Christmas!

I've been pretty good - haven't bought any this year.  Acquired about 5 or so last year, only 1 the year before - have been trying to build them rather than just collect them.

Despite the relatively low number (compared to some others) i still have trouble deciding upon the next kit to build...

PS: DiscoStu: how's the F-14 build going?  I'm still yet to acquire the Academy kit for my stash, but hope to have it one day.

Not all of it. Cool thing is I found some really great spots for tucking new acquisitions away. There's a deep drawer that fits Hasegawa's 1/32 kits almost exactly. Got a 190 Dora, 109G-6 and Ki-44 in there. There's a shelf on the old entertainment center I use as a backstop to my bench that's PERFECT for the bigger 1/48 Monogram boxes. It's holding the Black Cat PBY, B-24J and Ju 88. 

Planning to sell of some chunks of the stash I just know I'm never going to build. But that's a hard game to play.

Yes, I live in the US and purchased them all here. I got the Frank, Jack and Val at model shows for a total of $36. Two of them were sealed!

Here's my own, relatively modest stash, starting with a set of shelves to the left of my bench:

I took those at least a year ago.  The stack on the right side of the photo from the spare bedroom now reaches to the top of the frame, and includes the Revell-Monogram Ventura, and the newer RM P-47 bubbletop, among some odds and ends.

There are also some small (about 8"x4"x4") plastic storage bins on and under the bench, with more of my kit figure stash.  Oh, and some copier paper box lids that I use for storage trays for figures, scattered about the horizontal surfaces in the basement.  I'd like someday to get a wheeled sheet pan rack from the restaurant trade, add pieces of 1/2" plywood for shelves, and use it as a storage caddy at the bench.

I think that it's pretty neat to get a glance at everyone's hoard- it helps flesh out that poster's modeling interests.

Most of my stash is tucked away in Rubbermaid storage bins, not easy to photograph all at once. I've got a list  80+, but lists just aren't as impressive as pics. I'll post something later.

 Certainly some impressive stashes here. Here's the currently 60 models in my "To be built in my lifetime" stash that I have in my man cave. this has grown a bit since the last similar thread due in part to X-mas and in larger part to Great Models clearance sale (Resistance is futile). In addition to this I have an additional 50+ models boxed up in my storage bus dating back to my High School days. All the little post it notes on my boxes are lists of AM parts I have for each kit. Thanks to everyone for sharing their stashes as I have seen some kits that take me back to my early modeling beginnings.

mine are 4 digit "project numbers", keyed into a database, to assign kits to the squadron they will be built for, decals and other parts are in that way also

it takes a lot of planes to build what I want as my goal, but, the only reason I post in these is so that some person might see a box and say "hey, I built that one back in,,,,,,,,,,,,"

I see boxes like that all the time when I look at all the other stashes posted,,,,,,,,once saw an Aurora armor set box that was my first "bunch of tanks" to kick off my wargaming, back in the day

oh well, back to reading,,,,,,nostalgia is fun, but, it ain't what it used to be (a line my son teases me with , lol)

I do my spraying in another area of the cellar, and my metal casting out in the garage.

I get by OK.  The hard part is displaying finished models.  I really have no display space, till I finish some of the renovations on my house.  And those won't get done, till I finish some of the models.  It's a vicious circle

TarnShip, I think you need a few more Phantoms, you seem a tad low.

Eric,,,,,mine only became a stash because of Phantoms, back in the late 80's or so,,,,,whenever Hasegawa switched from the "blue boxes" with artwork to the "limited edition" boxes with color photos on the cover

I went to the store to build an F-4B, and they were sold out,,,,,,,I asked about getting more, and he said I would have to wait for a new release with whatever new decals they'd use, and that it might be 6 months or more,,,,,,,it was about 8 months until that actually was re released (and noooo, using an F-4J was not possible)

I got ticked off at having to wait,,,,,,and have since bought every kit I will need to build the collection,,,,,,except that I am short a couple of Cougar models I stay on the lookout for at shows,,,,,,they are OOP, and some squadrons I will HAVE to use Cougars for, and will Have to make my own decals for, too boot,,,,,,,,very, very hard to include VA-26 on the shelf without a Cougar to build for them,,,,,,or VA-16 without a Skyraider,,,,neither ever operated any other aircraft

so, I only did what I had to,,,,,even then, I only have 76 Phantoms up there,,,,,there is a guy on ARC with twice that many built and shown in a group shot every once in a while,,,,,,the most I have ever had on the finished shelves is about 15 at once,,,,,with less than 100 in my "all time built it once" list,,,,,,I threw out a lot of models because of "inadequate" displays,,,,,,that is the next step, staying ahead by about a dozen models at a time with the glass doors

Rex, it must take a certain mindset to build basically the same model over and over. I've seen some guys build maybe a dozen 109's or P-47s, but 76 of the same subject (granted there are some differences)

I guess you just have to love your subject and maybe the repetition doesn't matter.

You are completely correct, in my case at least,,,,,,,I don't enjoy building the same model over and over, any more than you do

that is why I have an F-4B for VF-14, an F-8J for VF-211,,,,,,,,an F-14 for VF-32,,,,,,A-4s, A-6s, etc, etc,,,,,,all the way back to resin F6C and F4B-2,,,,,,and a Jenny trainer,,,,a single F-10 Skynight,,,,anything actually, that is Naval, from the F4B-2 biplane to the F/A-18E

the only type of "same model building" I do,,,,,is sometimes I will build a few Skyhawks or Phantoms, or whatever,,,,,in a batch,,,,,,but, most of the time, aircraft types are staggered enough that I don't even build two jets in a row,,,,,,a Corsair, Hellcat, or Tracker gets in between

right now, in fact, on the bench,,,,,a Skyhawk, a Phantom, and a Hellcat,,,,,,with the Hellcat being the one touched most recently

76 Phantoms, then 49 Skyhawks, etc,,,,,*Would* be boring as heck to me,,,,,,almost as bad as building the squadrons in numerical order, lol

Dragon/Cyber-Hobby stash along with some rotary kits.  On lower right part of shelves, my next builds... 

Big fan of Dragon figures... about 50 of them along with Tamiya kits stored inside rubbermaid boxes. 

More kits stored inside rubbermaid boxes... some kits hidden inside my workbench.  I don't think my wife knows about those yet...

More hidden stash along with K98 bayonet just for self defense purpose only...

I enjoy it to to see some people's stashes, I just like to see what other people have and sometimes seeing very odd kits or something like that.

Deafpanzer, I hear ya, my mom and GF are nagging about my stash, that it's becoming way to big, but then I go on the internet and show some other people's stashes, who are a lot worse than mine!

You can also post things when you've just bought something new worth mentioning (when you buy a new kit every week or so, then wait for a weeks or so when you have like 3-5 new boxes or something

And good idea on the bayonet- must defend the stash! And you can use it to open really heavy packing tape when your shipments arrive.

Dang Andy, you have as many Dragon kits as my whole stash! Alas, I just added one today.

My stash currently sits at just over 200. But thats only the main kits, i dopn't include all the figure sets and support vehciles to go with my aircraft Dio's. If i did it would be 3 or 400. The onyl pic i can show is of my armour stash. All my aircraft are boxed up and all the figures are at home.

My other half doesn't yet know just how many kits i have. I have to move all these home later in the year, and somhow i have to sneak the stash past her.

After the move, most of mine are still packed in about a dozen huge cardboard boxes. I can't even remember what I've got!

I know the feeling doog. Those armour kits will get boxed up soon, and once everything is moved, it could be a while before they see the light of day again.

Wow! Having a chance to look at every photo posted on this thread, I realize that my stash is even more eclectic than I thought. I guess I shouldn't be, but I was really surprised to see how many stashes are dominated by planes or armor.  Don't have a photo, but here's my line-up:

Figures - 3 Aurora Knight kits; 3 dinosaurs; Elvira, Wonderwoman, the Mummy, and Green Lantern.   Sci-Fi - Martian war machine, Star Trek Defiant and Vulcan shuttle, BSG Viper, Star Wars tank, Seaview sub.  Ships- Air cushion landing craft,  2 destoyers, battleship, Pibber, freighter, seawolf and balao class subs.  Planes - 1/32- X-1, X-15, F-16, F-86, Bf109 and 1/48- corsair, spitfire, P-38, Me262, B-17, and B-29.  Armor - Tiger 1, Pershing, Panther, and Da Vinci prototype.  Autos - Lotus series 7, '59 Cadillac.  Space - Man in space rocket collection, and First lunar landing.  and  Misc?. -  six 1960's Pyro antique firearms kits (5 flintlock pistols, 1 Kentucky long rifle).

Given my age, and the number of kits in my stash, I'm not sure I ever want to waste time building the same thing twice.

I may be able to post pics some day, but for now let's just say that last time I moved it took about 20 boxes from U-Haul, mostly Medium size with a few Larges for big ones like the XB-70 and the B-58, to get them contained.

I made sure to label the boxes so I know what's in them.

Between the fact that I won't be buying a home anytime soon and would like to save some packing time on any moves, and the fact that boxes on shelves are a bad idea with cats in the house, putting them out like most of you guys isn't a good idea here.

These were added to the stash Saturday. Got them that our model show.

Yeah when I saw it at the show I had to buy it. Good to hear that it's a quick build. Looking forward to it.

 Per request here are additions to my stash since my last post. Some excellent scores from Great Models clearance sale (again I did not have to pay S&H as my brother picked them up from the warehouse). A couple of kits from clearance pile at the LHS while at WestFest 2012 and lastly the Eduard bf 110 and the Acurate Miniatures B-25B Mitchell (Model in a bag, no box) were presents for my 50th birthday last weekend. Enjoy!

My stash has developed a distinct French accent the past few weeks, need to get some photographic evidence...

Nice stuff JOE! Really digging that Ju88, and they got that Bf 110 at my LHS, I'm thinking about buying it if it's still there after my trip to the US, because, it is a beautiful kit!

I've also got some new thingies in my stash these weeks, they were all bargains!
The beaufighter isn't new but since I had to move it, I just thought on putting it next to the F-16.



Also got myself the 1/48 B-58 Hustler, 1/48 Meteor F1 with V1. 25 bucks each!

What nice stashes you guys have..........have been watching so decided to show some myself.  Will start with the two footlockers both full of figure sets and some miscellaneous accessory sets

One other footlocker contains a B-29, B-24, B-25, Wellington, P-61, and a TBD-1 Devastator all in 1/48.  I like all the big bombers but have yet to build one.

Ninetails - Thanks, Indeed, I highly recommend that you snag up the Eduard bf 110 as it is a limited edition and out of the box is really amazing.  Certainly not for the novice builder. And for the $59.95 price tag is actually a sweet deal given the mask, PE and resin it comes with. 

I may have to get around to this fairly soon as my wife got this for me for my birthday. My wife had been with her daughter for the past week for the birth of our first grandchild (my stepdaughter) and thus had not been able to take the time to find anything for me. That was completely fine with me. But while I was at the WestFest 2012 contest and thusly near the LHS, she called me up and was feeling so bad about not being able to get me anything the following miraculous words came out of her mouth, " Is there a model there that you really want but have not quite wanted to spend the money for?"  After catching my breath in disbelief I replied "Um, yeah, there's a whole store full." She then instructed me to pick one up for my present. Thus the Eduard Messerschmitt bf 110. God I Love my Wife.

Alrighty folks, here it is. I started taking pics of the box tops about a year ago. My stash is tucked away in 3 large Rubbermaid storage containers, plus a few that are hanging around inside my rolling "supply locker". (and a few at the office for those times when I get the bug to do something "modelly" at the office over lunch...) So, with the exception of a couple of 1/35 figure sets & various resin bits/decals, here it is...

Nice collection Vance. Thats given me an idea. I also now take photos of all my kits, ever since i started doing GB's on here. So maybe i can put my stash together in a similar way.

I'm a graphic designer by trade, access to photoshop is a wonderful thing. Although Photobucket seems to have scaled it down for me, the original is much larger, easier to see. There must be a maximum photo size in height. I should have set up two not-so-long images...

Sorry I didn't reply sooner...its a K98 bayonet. Nothing special about it except for being in great condition and all of the serial numbers match.

With everything organized by box size more-so than subject relation, I can probably squeeze in another 20 or so!!!!!

My math says if I end up building 10/year, I've got about 8 years worth of modeling happiness all saved up in that stash of mine. Doesn't sound ridiculous to me...

you always tell yourself that you have enough kits but when new releases come out....you gotta have it. when i get over loaded i start selling some then it all comes back. it's a never ending process.

I don't get side-tracked by the bells and whistles of new releases... But when I get a notification email from Ebay that there's, say,  a chrome-plated 1968 1/48th HAWK T-33A for a "Buy It Now" price of 9.99 and 4.00 shipping....

My wife'd sure like to find out...

Ebay is a treeasure-trove for me: Militaria vendor, 70's hobby-shop, toy-store, electronics store, tool-shop, etc...  I'm a big fan, both as a buyer and a seller..

Before I discovered Ebay, only way I could find those kits was places like Old Model Kits DOT com, and  their stuff, for majority of kits, are at collector-prices, not builder-prices...  Unless you absoulutely MUST have a certain kit, and they're the only place you can find after an exhaustive search elsewhere, then I guess they're ok to buy from...  Their bargains are very few...

Ebay is far better though, and a lot of foks don't know what they have.. And they price it thataway.. But a lot of 'em are catchin' on... Monogram, Revell, and some Hawk kits are starting to go through the roof, and when combined with shipping, they cost more than modern kits.. Case in point, the Monogram Me109E kit.. Took me a couple years to get one at a price that I would pay, and it was still too high, LOL.. And that was a bagged, no decals kit (which is fine, BTW)..

I'd venture to say that, even though there're are a lot of kit-snobs out there that pooh-pooh the old kits in the forums of the world (this one included), that there are also some "closet" Monogram Freaks too..

Not a Monogram closet freak, but I have nothing against them. I recently came across some dearly departed modeler's collection in a 2nd hand shop near my place. 100's if not 1000+ kits. There were several newer kits to be had, including one of my "grail kits", the ProModeler Ta152. Picked up several ProModelers, an Italeri rebox of a Dragon Me262. But what I have kept going back for.... older 1/72 Heller (and a few Airfix) kits, really nicely done, mostly European, pre-1990s jets. (~ahem~ Saab group build anyone?? )  Interesting subjects for me as I don't get all that excited about "modern gray jets". Also an armful of Italeri "Flankers" that I've recently cracked boxes on.

I have actually bought kits from those shops for a much, much  better price than E-Bay asking price.

(Those E-Bay guys gotta be nuts for asking some of those prices ! ) 

The Chicago area hobby shops told me they don't charge E-Bay collector prices because they actually want to sell the kits.

Looks to me like the smart brick and mortar shops are doing re-sale and cut into some of that E-Bay re-sale  business.

Now if we could only find a way to get the old-geezer modelers to die off more quickly so we can grab their stashes...

Err, uhh, I mean, that'd be a shame, but I don't mind buying the goods. I dropped into "my source" a few weeks ago to pick up some cool-looking French WW2 Heller kits. He's getting down to probably 50 or so kits. (A lot of more modern "gray jets", probably decent kits for the $, just not my schtik) But he looked around the shop like a paid informant, looked back at me & confessed "I'm working on another buy"....

Still a good selection of 1/48 gray jets, I think I posted pics of their shelves about a month or so ago next door. If not still there I can re-post for you. I know there are a few F16s, F15s etc...

No problem Ninetalis. I need to make an addition to the stash! Just picked this up for $7...

As mentioned above, I'm not really into "modern gray jets", but this one seems to fall into "so ugly it's cool" category for me. And I've never built anything with a wing-fold before, so I really couldn't pass on this one!

I told myself that I was going to cut back on purchases. LOL My problem is that I'm too impulsive. Later I'll have regrets and end up selling them for something that I want more.

These are my latest purchases this year. I'm not sure if I bought the Panther last year, which I feel that I did during a Spruebrothers sale around Christmas.

The other two were off of ebay. Both were around $22 each including postage. Not sure why I bought the Cyberhobby kit. It was cheap and I might use it as a trade.

I've bought myself a new box today and thought that I had to upload my last acquisitions,

The Revell phantom is actually a rebox of the Hasegawa kit, I bought it for something around $30!
They even gave me a discount, because the box was opened and a bit worn by it's age.
the P-47N was a present from my girlfriend, since we've been together for a year now.

So, it has been pretty quiet in here, you guys stopped buying stuff or something?!

Second-hand kits, good glass & decals, $20 total layout. That Intruder is a great little kit btw - highly recommended. I happen to know there is a group build for it right now too....

That article was one of the biggest influences in me wanting to try armour models (up to then, i'd only been interested in planes), however, i was always too cautious to buy it, instead opting for 'cheaper' armour kits.

I found it at a good price in a not so local LHS recently and thought i might as well get it.

PS: i don't like the rubber tracks that it comes with - if i were to replace with a/m tracks, what should i be looking at buying?

However, i'm just not sure what types - i've looked for them online, but really don't know what i should be looking for.  Ie some are mid production, some early, some late.  Do i just look for any Pzkpf tracks?

O ye, Fruils are pricey, don't i know it. I've got over 20 sets waiting to be used, so you can imagine how much that has cost. But i love them. If it wasn't for the price, i would have replaced every kit tracks with them. As it is, i have only replaced the rubber band tracks.

If you decide on Fruils, its set ATL 05 you want. They are a mid/late war set for the Pz III/IV. I don't know about MK tracks, but again you would need a mid war set.

I recently acquired a stash of kits for $30. Yup, $30. Sadly, very few will see my stash, but they will buy me some great kits that I my might want.

VERY NICE!  Let me know if you are planning to sell some of those Dragon figure sets.  I am very interested... Panzer crew sets.  You know me... I like to include figures to all of my builds.

Ye, i think its a bit above that. But as she has never seen the stash, i think i can get away with it. I can just say i have had a lot of them before we meet.

I plan on leaving mine in their boxes once i move them, at least until i get somewhere to put them.

Since I'm moving all my kits to my new apartment I figured it was the perfect time to photograph/share my stash. Forgive the mess in the background - moving is messy business.

middle of the tower... The tamiya 300zx and Desmosedici are both built but will be returning to their boxes for the move.

The m1a1, F-15 eagle and the a-10 warthog are all complete and packed in their respective boxes for the move.

I was not beeing around on the forum, because I've been lurking around some hobby shops around the East Coast of the US,...where I was busy buying... well yea.. Boxes, lol.

 
I've bought around 25 boxes, 11 of 'em are from the US, yippee!
I sadly haven't found all of those that I really wanted, but I'm happy with what I did find!
I also visited various Museums (NASM DC, Marines museum,...)

Finally have what I'd call a stash, and also finally counted it up:  52 kits, not counting 2 WIP.  Mostly planes, a few ships.  I handle the Mrs. on it by occassionally shopping for a real airplane, and dropping comments like, "Oh, look, dear, here's a 1948 Cessna 140 for only $40, 000," or, "I saw a 1943 T-6 Texan for sale for only $129,000."  I know it rankles her that I have a thousand dollars worth of models sitting around, but she says nothing ... I can probably buy model kits until the cows come home - and who's gonna stop me?   Bwa-ha-hah!  Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-hah!
